Many of you will remember in June 2012 when this 7 foot red tail boa was released from a local pet shop in Charlottesville, VA (Please not he was NOT released by employees of the pet shop or the owner of the pet shop, he was released by a third party cleaning crew that came into the store while they were closing). He has become somewhat of a legend to the people here. Many have gone out to the site of his release and tried to find him searching through the woods and creek behind the shopping center the pet store had been located at. The attempts were unsuccessful and then one night in July 2012 he made his first appearance since being released. Sadly, that appearance resulted in an employee at the local establishment he showed up at duck taping a butcher knife to the end of a broom and attacking the red tail boa. He suffered several gashes to his body and a deep stab wound to his lower body which resulted in part of his intestines protruding from the wound. Even after being attacked by this man he did not strike or make an agressive move, he simply ran away into the woods. After surviving with this horrendous injury for two months outside in the dirt and weather, he was found by a good hearted man that had once worked at the establishment when he showed up in search of his pay check. Rather than killing the snake or calling someone that would have him put to sleep he found it in his heart to reach out and find somewhere safe for him. After a long string of phone call after phone call he was given our number. We set out to go get this snake unsure of what exactly to expect of his injuries or his temperament. When we arrived we found a very docile and tame snake with a terrible injury. We have now brought this sweet snake home and will be taking him to the vet in the morning for what looks like will be extensive care. Right now the best guess low end estimate for his care is $1000.00. We are setting up a special fund for the snake that we have since name Wunder which is German for Miracle. If you would like to donate to this special fund please make all checks or money orders payable to Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke and in the memo place Jennifer Witt CVRR (Wunder) so that it can be credited directly to the vet care. The address for the vet clinic is 3959 Electric Road Suite #155 Roanoke, VA 24018. If you have questions you may email us at or call us at 434-808-5371.

Wunder was on the CBS 19 and NBC 29 news and his story can be seen here:

09-06-2012 I just got an update from the vet's office. After 2 1/2 hours of surgery Wunder has survived his first bout with recovery and is doing well! He surpassed even the vet's expectations this time! The injuries did include the stomach, intestines, lung, and gall bladder. The herniated intestines were able to be saved and placed back inside, but the wound has to be left open and treated to get rid of the rest of the infection and he will likely be hospitalized for a while longer, but as long as there are no further complications he is expected to recover! I am so excited to have good news to report to everyone! Thank you to those that have made donations to help pay for his vet bill and thank you in advance to any that will donate in the future. We still have a long ways to go before we have all of the money for his bills but every little bit is a great help and brings us that much closer to covering the costs! We are now looking at just over $2,000 in vet costs due to the extent of the surgery he underwent.

09-05-2012 We took the red tail boa that we have named Wunder (German for Miracle) to the vet today. Right now the vet is giving a very guarded prognosis on his ability to over come this injury. The stab wound resulted in a herniation of the intestines from the wound. The section of intestine that is pressed from the wound was covered with dirt and other contaminants. There is a lot of infection in the intestines and the wound and he had to be treated for maggots and infection. He is currently staying at the vet hospital for antibiotic and pain treatment. The wound has been cleaned well and cleared of insects, but the infection is still bad. The vet placed barium in the snake to see if it would clearly pass through the intestines or if there was something that would block it and it did not pass beyond his stomach. Tomorrow the vet will go in to do an exploratory surgery to find out what is blocking the barium from passing through the intestines and investigate the internal damage that he is suffering. If the injuries are reparable he will then complete the surgery. He is giving him about 80% chance right now, as long as the surgery goes well in the morning. At this time we are looking at more than $1,000 in vet bills just to get him healthy enough to leave the hospital.

Make checks/money orders out to Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke and send them to:

You definitely need to convince your hubby that this guy should be part of your house.

Wow, did I read that right? An employee from the store the snake escaped from tried to kill it? I hope that person doesn't work there anymore. You would think someone who works at an exotic pet shop would be a little more considerate of the snake.

I wish, but until we find homes for the kittens and probably the mama too I better not even whisper the word snake lol plus having Aurora further complicates the issue...:(((
