Okay so, I don't know if anyone at all remembers but I purchased a giant spiny chameleon from a guy who claimed he had metabolic bone disease. When I brought him home it was clear it was not MBD but what I thought was gout.. I brought the chameleon to my local reptile vet and he said that the forearm at the ankle was broken. He did no x rays. I did as he said and gave my cham the medications he offered for 6 weeks. No progress happened after 18 weeks... and by that time all four of his ankles had these lumps as you can see in the photo. I took him back and demanded x rays. What we found was very strange! The chameleon had a growth that was literally separating the hand from the ankle joint and eating away the surrounding flesh... inside out... The x rays are so intriguing I will post them as soon as my vet sends my the photos... Unfortunately I had to put him down... the pain and suffering he was going through was to much. I do however want you to keep posted on the x rays... its very strange and the vets didn't know what it I'm interested in anyone has ever heard of it or something like

Did you by chance have a necropsy performed?

It sounds like you are describing articular gout that can sometimes cause bone lysis. A necropsy would help with a diagnosis, even if it is post mortem.

All I know is that As soon as I get those x rays sent to me, I am going to figure out what he had... and know I paid 400 dollars to get x rays and to unfortunately put him down. I Couldn't afford anything else. :( My vet told me that it was not gout... I stressed to them that it was gout and I stressed articular gout to them.. and they shot me down... if that is what he had.. they killed my chameleon... from the moment I brought it to them they diagnosed him wrong.

I'm so suspicious about what vets say especially when it comes to reptiles. They made a mistake on my dog which Unforchanitely ended up making him lose his life about a month ago and you would expect them to know. I'm now a big fan of second opinions. Sorry for your loss. Atleast you we're trying to properly help him.

    - Thank you for your concern and yeah I know vet's aren't everything we think they are as terrible as that is...I mean the pet foods they push isn't even good quality! I guess I shouldn't doubt all vet's there tons of great vets but I mean when it comes to reptiles it comes to talking to a specialist :( I am sorry to hear about your pup :(

Sorry to hear about your little guy. Was the Vet a herp Vet or just an over all practice? It's hard finding a herp vet some times... did all you could though

Unfortunately x rays alone won't give you a difinitive answer. Blood work would help and a necropsy would be where to get your answer now that the animal is gone. It could have been bone cancer or osteomyelitis for all we know. Its hard to find an answer with limited funds, and even with all the money in the world, sometimes answers aren't found.
