Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

This is one of the neatest peices of writing I ever read. And truly a tear bringer to those of us who have ever lost a beloved pet.

I had posted it before and thought that we had put it as a sticky on the opening to the "Over the Rainbow" section of the forum.

    It is now.

You are most welcome. The first time I came across it I had just lost Shadow, my long time buddy, a German shepard dog.
I cried like a baby,.... and didn't care who saw it!

We just unexpectedly lost a dear pet today. His name was Jinx (he was a huge black cat) and he was ran over by a car. There couldn't have been a better time to read this. Thanks for posting. :)

So sorry to hear that Justin :( Our thoughts are with you.

I love that piece Merlin, beautiful read. I remember reading a short story about the loss of a pet and even though I am not religious it definitely brought tears to my eyes. I have been searching google for it, I can't seem to find the story. So I will try and rewrite it from memory..

There is a family of five, Father, Mother, 8 year old son, 5 year old daughter, and a 16 year old golden retriever in a small suburban house. The dog is reaching the end of his days and they have a family friend vet visit their home over the last few weeks of his life. Thanks to the vets care and love and comfort of the family, the dog passes silently surrounded by those he loves in no pain at all. After he passed, the son is in tears and asks "Why did he have to die?" The parents and vet have no real answer for him, he is too young to understand the life span of a dog. The daughter however is not distressed at all. She seems just fine. She is the one who eventually breaks the silence and answers her brother, "I think its because God puts us here to we can learn how to be good people, and to love everyone, so when we are good we can become angels in heaven. Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long..."

I do hope I can find the original, if I do I will edit this post with the true text and author. Certainly something I never thought of, and it makes a whole lot of sense :)

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears perk forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

    For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

I was accused of Hoarding when we had to put down my Donkey....bullets of sweat. I owned him for 15 years at least...it was so sad in the winter time when I had to dig him out of a blizzard. I do not think I was the person everyone wanted me to be!
