Steve Irwin was my inspiration to become a herpetologist, I actually sat and cried for a bit that morning. its all really sureal, I grew up watching him, and planned to visit the zoo/meet him when I get into the field. Its a sad day for animal lovers, I must send my best wishes for the family. God bless 'em all.

I wonder how long it will be before the footage shows up on the internet?

I was extremely sad to hear about the loss of Steve Irwin, he was a truely amazing man who did a heck of a lot for conservation. I have to disagree with the opinions of some; unlike many, this entertaining and wonderful man never performed stupid acts or unsafe captures - he was a trained herpetologist who was brought up to respect and save the animals that we love and did a great job for people like us and nature on the whole.

My thoughts are with his also-amazing family, who i'm sure will continue the work he did; it is a distressing time for them, but they will know his memory will live on in people's minds as a respected and unique person.

ChromeLibrarian, thank you for starting this thread for people to share their comments, however, i think the discussion of whether the film of his death will be displayed in bad thought should be left for another time and place. Please keep this thread to a respectful recording of your wishes towards Steve and his family.

    Farewell Steve Irwin

Okay, I am not sure if it's in the right forum.. But I wanted to share a poem I wrote in the memory of Steve Irwin.

    Farewell Steve Irwin

    With sorrow, I depart
Everytime I think about it, I fall apart
Nothing can hide those hidden impressions
Feelings are more than just sorrow

    I'm sad, disheartened and depressed
    Grief fills my soul
    I have visited Australia Zoo
To see how far you've achieved

The most enthusiastic person you were
The most amazing crocodile hunter I've ever known
You were brave like no one else
You were one of a kind

I am caught in the middle
This feeling is just like a riddle
It is buried deep beneath a murky layer
So close, yet so far away

Nothing is left but the traces of what you left behind
You made hunting crocodiles look easy
    When it wasn't even simple
    You've helped many orphaned animals

    When something went wrong
    And it didn't seem right
    "Crikey" you would say
Out of all animals, a stingray got you

    Now, that you're gone
    Everything appears different
    You are a true legend
    Farewell Steve Irwin.
