No way is it because of the tourist industry...that industry affects other things, like the coastal areas, marine life and coral reefs. Quick money is in mind, rather than how to protect the precious natural environment and still have visitors! Jamaicans in general hate and fear snakes of any kind and believe they are evil and "poisonous" and that they must be killed on sight - and they usually are So they have a huge natural enemy in human beings. Habitat destruction is going on apace with developments like housing and agriculture and chopping down of brush and trees for fencing and coal, etc., encroaching on the snakes' territory and ability to survive and find food more and more. Bauxite mining is a huge threat to them and many other endangered species. The snakes are being isolated in little areas, cut off from each other by roads. Those are the things that are destroying them.
