Many years ago, when I was a kid, we used to place an aquarium heater tube (the type used for tropic fish tanks) and place it in a large glass jar of water. This not only kept the lizard warm, it raised the humidity. Is this still the best way to heat an iguana terrarium?

Short answer, not even close. Too much risk of the ig tipping that setup over, possibly breaking things. What we really need to know is what kind of cage setup your talking about, there are a lot of options depending on the cage. If your just talking about maintaining ambient temps in a cold room at night, a ceramic heat emitter on a seperate t-stat is a great option.
