I found a 30 gallon tank in my parents shed, its one of those tanks that are sold as reptile cages with the sliding screen top. Ive heard that they cant be used as fish tanks due to something with the glass thickness or something like that. Is this true? What about a vivarium with a water feature, like say 4-6" worth of water?

It should be fine as a vivarium setup. I am using a 30gal reptile cage as my fire belly toad set up with about 6inches of water and lots of rocks

just dont go over 6in. the glass is not thick enough to support prolonged pressure. the seams are also very thin silicone.

Just put another layer of silicone over the corners and bottom, a little wider than the original. Then test it out.
