I went herping for a few hours yesterday afternoon and found this little lady, Phrynosoma modestum (Roundtail Horned Lizard). I was only expecting Uta stansburiana (Side Blotched Lizard) and Urosaurus ornatus (Ornate Tree Lizard)

Leery of me after I put her back :)

Isn't she? I almost lost it! :) Horned lizards are amazing! They eat ants and have a defense response where they bleed from their eyes that's specialized with respect to canids!

Great find, so they look very similar to the horny toad lizard ( I think thats what people called them) except the tail is rounded and isn't as spiky.

They're in the same genus (Phrynosoma). We have several species in NM including cornutum and solare. The vernacular is horny toad lizard... :) I call them horned lizards, and am teased for doing so lol
