If my laser digital thermometer says it has a distance ratio of 6:1, what does this mean? How far should I hold it if I'm trying to get the distance of a surface, or the air?

What it means is that at 6 inches from the target it is reading a circle 1 inch in diameter. As the distance from the target increases, so too does the size of the circle it is reading.
In other words if your gun is 12 inches from the target the size of the circle will be 2 inches. So the closer to the surface you are holding it, the more accurate your spot check will be.
And a temp gun only reads by way of a beam of light. It only registers solid surfaces, You can't use it on air, water, or glass.
