In the past I have tinkered with using crate and foam to build backgrounds/accessories/ramps for tanks. I was considering doing this for the 75 gallon I will be putting together for my future dragon but am hesistant as I don't know how the back ground will hold up against the heat from the heatlamp on top of the lid. I didn't know if the area temp will be more than it can stand.

Has anyone used spray foam for backgrounds/ramps and what was your experience?

I am also considering going the styrofoam carved background and am curious as to what brands of cement/paint you have used.

I hear a lot of people that use multiple coatings of non sanded grout to "paint" the foam carved backgrounds. They use multiple layers to give it the durable rock surface affect. What ever you use I'd recommend something with a low VOC%.
