Hi guys! Ive decided to use soil/compost in my cwd enclosure.

How long should i bake it for in the oven, and what temperature should i do it at? :)

Hi, you cannot bake soil, it will turn to dust, and a particulate substrate is not recommended (why do you want to bake it anyway)?

Actually you can bake it to sterilize it.
I did it back when I was making my own potting soil.
However, be advised that your housemates may not like you very well as the house will stink to high heaven for days!
I did around 190F degrees for 30 minutes with the soil spread out about 2-3 inches deep. Make sure the soil is damp but not wet.

But I tell you the odor will be foul!

Yes I thought my wife was going to run me out of the house!
But I put up with her stinking cigarettes for years so she didn't have much room to talk.:D

Yeah, i heard it sterilizes it. I'll give baking it a miss then if it reeks that bad!! Haha.

If i bought organic soil, would that be better? or unsafe?

Honestly, I think people with herps are far too paranoid about sterilizing soil.

I have been using dirt and sod from my back yard for almost a decade, and have never sterilized it.

What exact cootie bugs are you afraid of here?

Any grubs, insects or larvae found in the dirt are just extra snacks for about any lizard to munch on.

I think the main concern is dragging in reptile mites.

Well, i considered just using backyard soil :p but every care sheet i looked at was the reason why i thought it'd sterilize it haha.
