So last weekend I went to a reptile and exotic animal show here in Raleigh. I was determined to make it out w/o a new pet and I did! however; this guy had me tempted:

I've been wanting a Hog nose snake for a while and this guy was too cute. He is a year old and has a solid black belly and the cutest little elf slipper shaped nose. I had to force myself to put him back and my bf had to remind me that I didn't actually have any money anyway....oh well, maybe next year :p

Cute shot of you and the hognose! I just adopted one and he is great so I definitely recommend them as pets.

He is a real cute little guy. I'm suppose to go to a show this Sunday, and I'm not planning on buying any reptile, I know it will be tempting for sure. It sounds like the key is don't bring money? I'll bring some for my much needed supplies.

Aww how cute. You have stronger willpower than I do. I would've found some sort of occasion I needed the snake for. I'm pretty sure I'm set on birthday presents till I'm 50 so I might have to start using Christmas :p

I will have the same problem next weekend ! A couple friends and I are taking a road trip from NY to Ohio to attend the expo there, I am not looking for a new family member, only feeders LOL We also placed a HUGE order with Rodent pro, and are picking it up at the show to save on shipping !

The dean of my biology dept is also a DVM (among 2 other PhDs) and he usually works as the show vet for the Atlanta area expos. And even as a person of his discipline and ridiculous intelligence...he still has trouble not taking home just ONE more herp from every show lol.

So don't feel bad guys. Apparently it's a disease that even the doctorates suffer from :-D

WOW, you have so much more will-power than most for sure.....(as for me, whenever I go to an expo, I enter with the philosophy of "look but not touch"...if I can stick to that, then I can usually make it out of the expo without an addition...if I actually pick one up, well....it's pretty much over...lol)

    Thanks for sharing the photo.:)

Thanks for all the comments! yeah he was hard to put back but the simple fact was that I could not afford him at all. unfortunately for me there is another show a couple hours away in October that i might go to and i will have the money, so I might come home w/ a new pet. my parents probably wont be thrilled....

I can see why you would have a hard time putting that little guy away. I would have been sorely tempted too. I am currently trying to talk the wife into letting me go to the show in Charlotte. I have absolutely NO problem not buying a new snake at these shows...yeah,right! I am like an addict at a crack factory when it comes to snakes. Great photo Annaj328.

Thanks for sharing your pic -- it's always nice to start putting names and faces together!

I don't know how you put him back! I don't think it's a coincidence that I somehow managed to miss the BIG Expo in Timonium, MD this month -- that was karma telling me to STOP! o:)

... of course I REALLY needed rats for my snakes, so now I'll have to buy the buggers at the pet store ($$$) until the next local show~

When I bought my hognose, she was a hatchling. I can't believe I didn't take pics of her but she was really tiny. The guy actually didn't even want to sale her to me cause they had just got her and haven't seen her eat. But I went ahead and took her with a "no guarantee".

She's now around 27" long. I'll have to get some pics of her. I was almost gonna trade her in for a corn snake but decided not to.

Also wanted to ask, what do the hognoses usually sale for at these shows? I think the closest show to me is about a 3 hour drive to kentucky. I want to go to a show so bad just to look. Kind of hard to want to drive that long to just look. But I'm sure if I did go to a show, I'd bring somethin' back.

Hognose are specialist toad-eaters. Make sure that if you buy one, it has already been converted (unless you appreciate the challenge, that is!)

    Me too!

Do you think I just got really lucky with mine? She started out on frozen thawed pinkie mice with no problem at all and has never missed a meal. I think I have had her about 2 years now.

One type of hognose is reported to switch pretty well while there is another that is just darned adamant that it is a toad eater not a rodent eater.
One is the eastern hognose and one is the western and I can never recall which is which.
