Live Rat Kills Ball Python During An Unsupervised Feeding
Feeding live rodents to a captive snake could potentially turn disastrous in seconds. Unfortunately for the snake in the pictures below, the situation turned deadly and the snake had to be euthanized as a direct result of the injuries he sustained when his owner left a live rat in with the ball python for the night. The unsupervised rat decided he didn't want to be on the menu and aggressively defended his life. Situations like these can be avoided completely by feeding your snake frozen/thawed rodents. You should NEVER leave a rodent unsupervised with your snake.
A common argument by many who feed live to their snakes is that their snake can't end up like the snake on this page because they supervise their live feedings. While supervising the feeding can prevent the multiple injuries this poor animal endured, it can't prevent a single bite that could create any of the wounds the snake is displaying. Since many snakes will willingly take rodents that have been stunned, pre-killed or those that have been frozen and then thawed, more people should take the time to try and convert their snakes to help prevent situations like the one described on this page. One bite is all it could take from a rodent to end your snakes life. While supervised feedings are safer, they still endanger the snake and can be just as deadly.
