Okay now she's doing it too.

When I was at my friend's store the other day I saw one of thier CWDs sitting in the enclosure with it's mouth open. Whenever I would look towards the thing it would shut it's mouth. Now my Pez is doing it too only she doesn't care who's looking at her. Its not an all the time thing, but I notice it does tend to stop right after I spray the enclosure. Is she trying to get moisture?

it can also meen the temps are to low. ive heard they do it in the early stages of a resperatory infection. the following is a quote from Tricias water dragon page:

# Respiratory Infection

Respiratory infections are usually caused by inadequate heat, and by being kept under stressful conditions. Reptiles often do a good job of not demonstrating obvious signs of illness until a disease has progressed to the point that it cannot be easily treated. Signs and symptoms of respiratory infections include reduced appetite, listlessness, swollen appearance of the body, and as the infection progresses gaping followed by occasional forced exhalations. If you suspect that your water dragon has a respiratory infection he should be taken to the vet, who will probably place him on antibiotics, and the cage temperature should be increased to 85 - 88 F around the clock until the symptoms subside.

hope this helps

the enclosure ranges from 80-95 and she's had a plentiful appeitite (now that the shed is over she ate 6 crickets yesterday) and she only looked chubby after she ate but looks normal now. But I'll keep an eye out for those sympts and if anymore show up I'll bring her to the vet. I'm not too concerned now cause inkman's does the same thing.

Mine did that gaping when she started getting a Resp. Infection and it wasn't pretty. You should try raising your heat a bit if it's not aleady, it should be somewhere in the ball park of 84-88 on the warm side and 75-80 on the cool end. The humidity should be around 80% as well. The vet told me to lower the humidity to between 65-75 and raise the heat to the upper levels.

BUT, if your water dragon DOES have a resp. infection then there is no substitute for a vet visit.

Sitting with its mouth open (gaping) can also be a sign of being too warm. Does she only do it when she is basking, or does she do it when shes sitting anywhere in the enclosure?

She mostly did it when she was basking (I haven't seen it the last couple days) I just moved her to a new 50gal enclosure that is doing a much better job of keeping heat and humidity (I used to spray the enclosure every hour just to keep it up, fortunatly I sleep at work and all my friends are roomates or spend most of the time here) But the old enclosure was a steady 85-91 throughout and I kept the humidity at 80% durring the day, but it would drop to 60 when I was at work, the new enclosure works fantastic. I really wish I could afford a vet visit right now, all I have money for now is gas and crickets (I'll get my roomy to share pizza so I can live too). Stupid state sent my checks out late... hope they hurry so I can pay rent cause as much as my mom wants me to I don't want to move back home.

Oh that reminds me the Chinese Water Dragon at the petshop doesn't do it anymore and since I'm there almost everyday to visit my buddy I know it hasn't been to the vets.
