strange behavior - targetted aggresion!!

okay, got a bit of a situation here, and wanted to know what the cause might be, and any possible solutions.

I keep Biscuit at Mike's house (he has more room than I do right now, and I spnt almost the entire summer there anyways). he's happy there, and able to get out of his cage for a couple hours everyday to run around loose in mike's bedroom. but, the last couple weeks, we've noticed a problem. Every once in awhile, Biscuit doesn't want mike anywhere near him. It started with hissing, and puffing up his throat when mike would come near, or try to take him out (not every day, mind you, just once in awhile). but, today, i was talking to mike after work, and it's prgressed to the point where biscuit tried to bite him a couple times this afternoon . Again, these temper tantrums aren't often, and are only towards mike, usually when he's trying to get Biscuit out of his cage.

my question is, why is he doing this?

I haven't been able to get out there as much the last 2 weeks, due to work and now school (it takes me an hour & a half to get to mikes on the bus), so I don't know if that could be part of it. Also, we've noticed that it's about time to start that new enclosure for him, as he's getting cramped for space in his 33g setup now (though he still has room to run around a bit, and swim in his pool). He's been scratching at the glass whenever he sees me, so that i'll let him out in the daytime. we've been trying to keep him out for longer periods of time, even putting heatlamps etc. in his favorite spots to keep him cozy. What could be causing this sudden aggressiveness, and why only to mike?

if anybody has any clues, please let me know!!

oh, and I should mention... once he's out of his cage, he's completely fine. and he has NEVER done this to me. the most he does with me is make me chase him around the cage a bit first, before he runs to my hand.

I have no experience with WDs but based on my experience with iguanas I am going to toss out a couple of ideas. Are you sure that Biscuit is a male? In your sig it shows unknown. How old is he? If he is maturing he may be becoming territorial of his cage. Is it possible that he is going into a breeding cycle? Could he have been acting aggressive and Mike backed down from him? Just a few thoughts.
Of course Tricia will probably have a better idea of what is going on.

thanks for the quick response! no, we aren't positive that biscuit's a male. Based on size, I'd say he is approximately a year to a year and a half old. Hm, i think it is possible that he's learning that mike will back down when he's aggressive; mike usually gives up on him for a cople hours once this happens. I'll have to have a talk with him about that, I think.

Water dragons aren't usually aggressive and they don't act the way iguana's do when they go into breeding season (ie territorial, aggressive). This is unusual behaviour.

Has Mike changed anything about himself in the last few weeks? Haircut? Wearing a hat? Dyed hair? Moustache, beard? Wearing a certain colour when the dragon reacts badly? Changed cologne? Anything ... ? (loud music or tv in background?)

As I said dragons aren't as picky about things as igs are (ie colours, scents, male/female caregiver) but something is throwing your dragon off.

Does Mike approach the tank in a different way than you do? ie quickly? Different direction (so that when he gets there he's standing more to one side of the tank than you normally do?). Water dragons notice reflections in the glass ... could the way Mike stands near the tank be causing a reflection on the inside of the glass that makes your dragon either see itself or see something that might be scaring him? His reaction seems to be more one of fright than aggression. Most dragons don't bite- but when they do it's usually a last ditch fright reaction.

Any other behaviour changes in Biscuit? Is he eating well? Acting fairly normal? Sometimes dragons will become a little more aggressive if they are becoming sick. Check him over carefully, check that his stool looks normal etc ... make sure he's in good health and that nothing about his cage has changed (that might throw him off too).

I don't know if anything that I've said will help, but hopefully you have a few more ideas to work with. Let us know if you figure it out!
