Hand Injury - Swollen
Hi Everyone, great site!
I am a little worried about my Chinese Water Dragon. A little over a month ago, she fell onto hardwood flooring from about 4 feet up. The next morning her hand appeared to be really swollen (like when you blow air into a surgical glove). I took her to the vet who xray'd her hand and there was no break or hairline fracture (which was really good news). He informed me that the swelling will be bad for a while and will eventually go down but at this point, it's still very swollen. She also seems to be losing circulation in her pinky finger and it is about to fall off. I have another appointment tomorrow however, I'm just curious if in the meantime any of you have any ideas about roughly how long a swollen hand can last on a Chinese Water Dragon. She is three years old, and up until recently, she has been in perfect health so I'm quite unfamiliar with this type of injury. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! |

Sorry Im not expirienced with that kind of Injury either all I can say is that if she is losing circulation to her toes the Vet initially missed something very Important the first time around, i know vet visits can be very expensive but if this Vet still says there is nothing wrong...get a 2nd opinion.
Good Luck

The vet I am visiting tomorrow is infact someone different at a different clinic.
The first time around I did have the opportunity to see the actual xrays and there was no damage to her wrist or other bones. I am hoping that it is just a horrible bruise. I'll keep you posted. But in the meantime, if anyone has any advice, let me know. Thank you. |

crutches...or a tiny wheelchair. LOL Just kidding, there is probably not much you can do maybe just try to get your dragon to relax and stay off that foot. Hopefully your next appointment will answer any questions you may have.
Good luck and happy herping... |

Hello,
If the hand were swollen to the degree that circulation was being compromised, the vet should have lanced it to relieve the pressure. Swelling normally is combined with fluid accumulation at the source. the body reabsorbs the fluid, and the swelling goes down. In a case where swelling is not going down, and it is causing further complication like circulatory problems, the normal protocol would be to lance or extract some of the fluid to relieve the pressure. Keep us posted on what the vet says. |
