Help please
My wd as some know has a eye problem and I have been having trouble with him eating.
Well I got him to eat some earthworms and feeder goldfish, but he is getting skinny. Just thursday he was doing great running around in the bathtub ate like a pig etc... last night he was looking a little tired and skinny and refused to eat so I just left the worms in his tank only to see them dried up! Today I got home at 1:30 pm and he looks aneroxic I cant believe the complete change, he is going to he vet on monday my question is what do I do? Should I force feed him baby food I have never had a problem like this before it is really quite odd he acts like a totally diffrent wd, dose anyone know what could be wrong. Maybe stress form his eye? Im really at a loss, I think I made it worse by trying to make him eat though and advvice would be so greatly appreciated. ![]()

Wow, i'm so sorry to hear this Audrey, that certainly is a quick transformation.
Since you have another day left to go to the vet, and he seems to be deteriorating quickly, I would try and force feed him something to keep his strength up. Is he not eating anything on his own now? Also give him another soak to keep him hydrated. Bare in mind however that the force feeding will be stressful for him so be quick, calm and gentle. Some kind of purreed food through a syringe would be your easiest bet. I don't know what could have caused this, I'm sorry. If he has had an eye infection then perhaps an infection has spread, or maybe the eye was a symptom of some kind of infection/disease. The weight loss could also be due to parasites. For now I guess there's not much you can do but the above and get him to the vet asap. Thinking of you both, please let us know how he gets on.

worse
I force feed him a little bit and soaked him again, its odd though cause every now and then he gets a energy spurt but then he acts like he is too weak to even open his eyes, I got him a pinkie to see if it will help.
This just dosent make sense......... ![]()

It does sound very unusual and worrying Audrey. The loss of weight and appetite really does lead me to think parasites of some sort, but you will know for sure when you get him to the vet tomorrow.
What did you feed him, did it go down ok? See how he goes, and if possible tomorrow take a faecal example to the vet with you. Thinking of you.

Lost
I cant figure this out, he acts like he is asleep now ?? How in the world could he have gotten this far and this bad in only 2 days! I cant take in a fecal cause I cleaned th water yesterday(do every day cause he goes potty in it) and he hasnt eaten or done any business since, I soaked him again he perked up but then began to get "tired" again......
When ghhis eye got messed up (it got cut from an impact with a screen door thanks to a friend who couldnt listen) it would get bedding in it and I called the vet to make a appointment and she told me to just clean it wout with water a few times a day cause there is nothing she could do. So all of this must be my fault I should have just went and saw her, and not taken her word. ![]()

Please don't think like that Audrey - for starters you were advised by a vet so you did what you could, and I really don't think that an eye injury could cause such a dramatic loss of appetite and energy.
I wondered if you could take a faecal because you said you force-fed him? If he does go to the toilet again before you get to the vets take the poo sample with you, it is the quickest way for the vet to check for parasites. You are doing everything you can, don't beat yourself up. When I first read the thread my immediate reaction was to tell you to get to a vet, but you had already made the appt. so well done. Let us know how it goes, and please be reassured that you haven't caused this.

looking better
I soaked him again and upped the hummidity and temps and he is moving around a little more, I have called 3 diffrent vets too see which one can take him soonest tomorrow... I left messages with my name and re told the situation and that it is urgent so hopefully I will hear something.
I am waiting for a sample even though I feed him some stuff (force) he still hasnt done anything.. Is there any other way to check for parasites? I know it grose but I was looking through his cage cause sometimes he dosent go in the water dish and found some old poo since I clean once a week and today was cleaning day it can only be up to a week old will this work? even if there is bed a beast on it? ![]()
