How Many Eggs?

I have had my water dragon for about 6 months, I think she is around 3 or 4 years old the person we got her from told me it was a boy, they had it in very bad conditions (small tank, no lighting, no crickets or worms) We have since got her in the right conditions and one day she laid about 11 eggs, thats when we knew it was a female instead of a male. Since that first time she laid eggs she has laid eggs about every month or two, the next two times she laid 5 or 6. My question is how often are they supposed to lay eggs, is she laying so many eggs because she wasn't able to when she was with her previous owner because of the bad conditions she was in. Is she playing catch up? Do water dragons hold their eggs if they are in the wrong conditions?

Re: How Many Eggs?

It sounds rather normal. Some dragons lay a lot, even if they have not been with a male. One of my females has been laying in a similar pattern lately - every month or two, although she has only laid twice or thrice so far in this pattern this year. It seems as though my females always lay at this time of year - It might just be "egg-laying season" now.

It is difficult to say how often a female will lay during a year as it seems to vary depending on the dragon.

I do not think that she is "playing catch up". If a female cannot find a suitable place to lay, she may either reabsorb her eggs or hold in her eggs thus becoming egg-bound - egg-binding kills.

Since she is laying so many eggs, be sure to provide her with a good, unexpired UVB source and extra calcium supplements. Eggs take a great amount of calcium and you do not want her to take this calcium from her blood and bones.

Re: How Many Eggs?

Yes, it sounds very normal to me as well. This is the third "season" for my Charlie - she is five years old now. She usually starts in late Feb, and lays a clutch, then a second about a month later, Then she waits 2 months to lay another clutch, and another a month later. Last year we had three rounds!

Is your female with a male? This year, after the first two clutches, I am keeping them separated and she is slowing down thank goodness! Be sure to give her calcium glucionate drops while she is gravid and just after laying so the eggs won't leach calcium from her bones.

No she is not with a male. That's why I was shocked when she layed them, I didn't realize until I got on here that they still lay eggs without a male.
