Eggs?? Confused!

Hey,

I was going to bed and noticed some white egg shaped objects berried in the digbox in the enclosure... I am really puzzled my Chinese Water Dragon is alone she does not have a partner yet and I had her for about 2 years now. As far as I know the earth I put in the digbox was topsoil and there was nothing there but earth... hmm how is this possible? They look exactly like this link

Note above is not my photo.

I will try to take pictures in the morning to show... does this make sense?

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

Female dragons can produce eggs without a partner. This is very awesome. Are you planing to take care of the eggs and hatching them?... Water dragons lay egg's on there own with out mates, just like fish. I'm not sure on how to take care of the eggs, but theres nothing crazy or unusual happening there, just nature.

Good Luck!

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

They produce eggs, but they are not fertile unless she has been with a male. How long have you had her?

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

If the female hasn't been with a male then most likely the eggs aren't viable.

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

No, dragons do NOT reproduce asexually. A female requires a male in order to reproduce.

However, females will lay eggs with or without a male - if there is no male, the eggs will be infertile.

Since your dragon has not mated, meki, her eggs are infertile and you can throw them away.

Also, be sure to be using a good, unexpired UVB light source along with calcium supplements for your dragon - eggs take a lot of calcium.

On another note, nearly all fish reproduce sexually, not asexually. Are you getting this confused with external fertilization, IzzyAndRex? Not to be a smart aleck, but so that facts do not get mixed up here.

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

I would freeze the eggs before you toss them just to be sure.

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

Ok, guess the information I was giving is wrong. Well the info I gave was quite right on the first post, but the A-sexual thing is wrong. Sorry I got the wrong info from someone else, and about the fish thing, once again wrong info.

And btw, your not smart you just know a little reproduction on these creatures.

thanks, and sorry.

Re: Eggs?? Confused!

Well I am going to apologize to the person I was getting a bit frustrated with, i understand I took it a little out of line, sorry. You where just doing whats right, and trying to help this person. Had a bad day, Took a little out on you.

But to the person with this post, i was reading a little bit on this, and yes if you don't have a male in the process at all you just get worthless eggs, so I would suggest tossing them out. unless you really think there is a chance, then take a hit at it.

Thank you very much,

It was late and I kinda freaked out I guess I kinda forgot about the possibility that the eggs can be infertile

This is soo wonderful that we have such an amazing community here at HC that can provide a sound advice!

So to answer the questions:

1. I had her for about 3 years I got her when she was 9 months.
2. I always wanted to get a mate but I wanted to wait till I built a nice home for Liz. Now that its more or less complete (constant work in progress ) I would be ready to get her a mate.
3. the Issue is that I heard that gettin a much younger mate may cause problems, she may fight with him.
4. Where can I get a 3 year old WD to mate?
5. About the light I have very good automated lighting/heating system with Megarays so that shouldn't be a problem...

Enclosure is here

So any suggestions about a mate ?

Thanks in advance!!
