My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

This picture was taken weeks earlier.

My Water Dragon was lying lifeless floating in its water dish. I thought it died. I turned off the lights, thinking it was dead. Later, I see that fool, chillin on the water dish, and it was alive. Was he sleeping? Can anyone explain what happened?

Sometimes they have been known to pull this prank on people.

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

But if he was on his back he could have died. When this happens it puts pressure on their lungs and cuts off their air supply. If you see this happen, turn it over.

He wasn't on his back he was floating. I know that being on their back is bad for them. I just wanted to know if there is any specific reason why they do this?

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

Make sure you have something in the water for your WD to perch on in the water. Sometimes the water gets cold enough that a WD will lose the ability to move and save itself. This might not be what happened here...but it would scare the beejeebees outta me enough to make sure it couldn't drown if it did get a little too cold... :-/

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

They may, like us, actually find it relaxing to float around for awhile, if there's enough water to do so. They certainly spend as much time as dragonly possible in their pools. If they've been active, and the pool is warm, they may be content to float for a bit.

Definitely, as Veronica mentioned, make sure they have something in the pool that they could climb on to bask or if they get too tired or cold to swim. And if he's scaring you, it's not at all inappropriate to pick him up and make sure he's still breathing. But, yeah, each water dragon has its own weird little habits that make them unique.

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

Mine does it ocassionally. I usually give him a poke to see if he moves because I'm paranoid, but everytime he does it, he's fine and will get out of the water eventually on his own. Just seems to like taking naps in the water.

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

My water dragons used to do it all the time. I had a heating pad under their basking water along with bubbler in their water. They had their own jacuzzi and loved chilling in it.
Seems to be normal behavior.

Re: My Water Dragon Died And Came Back To Life

It's very normal behavior...but usually the WD has a place to set it's feet. The problem is if the water is deeper than the dragon can keep it's head above water if it gets too cold. Mine used to hang out in the "jacuzzi", too.... But it was shallow enough that even if he got too cold the water wouldn't go past his shoulders.

In a large pool I would definitely consider some type of heater for the water...
