Re: I Really Want a Chinese Water Dragon

There are pet stores that sell them reasonably cheap. It's not the cost of the WD you have to worry about though. There is also the cost of lighting including; basking/heat lamp and UVB source, digital thermometer/hygrometer, water/humidity source, 55 gal. for a small guy (to get temp. gradients right), accessories such as light fixtures and decorations, etc. This is easily several hundred $$ to set up for one.

Most pet stores have them, but I would suggest finding one from a rescue that needs adopting. There are lots of unwanted ones.

Re: I Really Want a Chinese Water Dragon

Chinese water dragons are not all that common a surrender, but they are out there. Call some of the local vets and see if there is a reptile or exotic animal rescue near you. Rescue organizations can be pretty tough when it's a kid that wants the animal. Of course, your folks will be responsible for it's primary care. Since I believe it's your mom you live with and where the primary home the WD will be - your mom will need just as much knowledge in the care and well-being of the WD as you are trying to do. They do this to ensure the WD (or any other animal) go to the best home possible.

When you're not home on the weekends she will be the caretaker. And this is something you will have to keep in mind. It's very possible you can have two homes for it though. When you go to stay with Dad you can have an enclosure there, too. The moving may be stressful at first, but with more trips the WD can become very relaxed with moving between places.

I did find one through Mid-Michigan Reptile Rescue so they are out there. Just call around and find out if someone is close to you.

Just because your still a kid does not necessarily mean you will not be considered for adoption. I adopted a Mali uromastyx to a young girl of 11. Her mother was just as involved with the research which made it an easy adoption. That was about 3 yrs ago and the uro was fine last time I asked about her about a year ago.

Re: I Really Want a Chinese Water Dragon

Not trying to rain on your parade, but you stated in your anole post that your mother had a problem with energy usage.
With something like a water dragon you are looking at a large enclosure which accordingly will require much more in the way of lighting(Including UVB lighting) and heating equipment.
If she won't go for the needs of an anole she is really going to flip out over something like this.

Good point merlin...

Hey Buddy, you might just have to wait till Dad can dedicate some space for ya ok? Meantime this gives you plenty of time to research them and plan a habitat build. That should take you some time to do and build.

BTW you better put my tools back ! haha
