What a Brat

So, I've always heard that Chinese Water Dragon's benefit from having live plants in their enclosures, so I've tried and tried, with various different varieties that are on the "ok'd" list floating around here.

And with everyone, he digs up the roots, drags it off, and lets it die. He just will not let it a plant live in his enclosure. I guess that's ok, I just wonder if anyone elses Chinese Water Dragon does this? Is it possibly a territorial thing, and he sees a something new in his space and gets rid of it, or what?

That's also the only digging Dude does, is to uproot his plants, and drag them away.

Re: What a Brat

LOL...sorry. Don't mean to laugh at your issue...but Drago does the same thing. It has become a game with her. I put them in...she tears them out. I think it has become a challenge of the wits.

When her new enclosure is done, I am attaching planters to the walls of the cage...that way she won't be able to dig them out. I am using vining plants...so I can pretty much guess that she will destroy anything that hangs in her reach....sort of my own grooming service if the plants reach the floor of the cage.

They can be persistant little buggars. Have you tried different locations in the cage to plant or have you been replanting them in the same spot? Can you suspend a small planter from the top of the cage and keep it out of his/her reach?

Re: What a Brat

Instead of planting them directly into the soil, put them in pots and then the pot into the soil and bury it deep.

Re: What a Brat

I was going to suggest the same thing that Liz said. How big is the enclosure and how big is your WD?

Re: What a Brat

And I thought it was only my dragon that did that!

Good idea about putting the whole pot in there... I guess that would make it harder for them to dig them out.

Re: What a Brat

I haven't gotten our cage/aquarium all set up permanently just yet--we're new Chinese Water Dragon owners. I did put a live plant in there--pot and all. It isn't even really buried, yet, but he doesn't mess with it at all.

Where is there a list of "ok" plants to use? I know a few but would like a variety.
