Interesting Behavior.

Recently my wd nycho has begun to keep his mouth open. Its a little interesting because at first I thought that it was just him thermoregulating. Later after removing him and putting him in bathtub with feeder fish, he continued to do it. Any possible suggestions?

Re: Interesting Behavior.

If he is doing it when there is no heat present, it could be an upper respiratory infection. Listen to him breathing and see if you hear any whistles or gurgling.

Re: Interesting Behavior.

They also sometimes do that when they are feeling nervous or threatened. Does he have a cage mate, or is he in a high traffic or noise area of the house? You may have to lower his stress level.

But check with a vet for a respiratory infection first.

Re: Interesting Behavior.

Does he only do it under a heat source; was the water in the bathtub very warm? If so, that is normal. But if he does it often and away from a hot area, then it could be a respiratory infection as was said.

What are the temperatures in the enclosure? As was asked, do you hear any popping noises, etc. when he opens his mouth?

A respiratory infection needs to be treated by a reptile vet - no other options.

Re: Interesting Behavior.

Part of owning an animal, is taking them to the vet. If you hear popping and cracking from his mouth, he needs to go in. There are no other options.

Re: Interesting Behavior.

What types/brands of humidifier did you try? That info will not only save people from suggesting those to you and will also let people know that they don't work well.
