How Much to Feed My Dragon?

My dragon is about 1' from snout to the end of his tail. 6" from snout to the beginning of his tail or so.

Just wondering how much I should feed him...

His diet is currently crickets (small), earthworms (12ct, or too large in my opinion), mealworms (small), waxworms (medium) and fruits/veggies that he usually doesn't eat but I continue to try.

I don't want to overfeed or underfeed, but I don't kno0w exactly where to draw the line, someone help me out.

Also, how often should I cover his food in calcium spray?

Finally, does he require a vitamin supplement? If so, which kind?

Thank you,
Alex

Re: How Much to Feed My Dragon?

For vitamins, any good reptile vitamin will suffice.
I do not care for the calcium or vitamin sprays since, because they are fluids, end up running off and end up down in the bottom of the food dish. You never can tell how much the animal is getting . I recommend the powdered forms.

Re: How Much to Feed My Dragon?

Your dragon will let you know what's too much or too little. Feed him until he stops eating. When he gets full, he'll stop. Most don't over eat. If your dragon starts to gain extreme weight, then cut down on the amount you feed him by about a third. That should get him on track for a normal diet.

Keep in mind that just like our food, some types of food are more fatty than others. If you feed him a regular diet of wax worms, for instance, he may bulk up more than if he's eating crickets or mealworms, but it's fattier so less healthy. So it's a good idea to limit the amount of those foods that you give him. Crickets, meal worms, and earth worms are all good staples. Wax worms should be fed more as a treat once or twice a week. The same for pinkies when he's big enough to eat them. If he won't eat the veggies, gut load your insects with them, and at least he'll get some of the nutrients that way.

Re: How Much to Feed My Dragon?

At that age, offer him food once a day, as much as he will eat per sitting as Typhanie said. Once the dragon reaches 18+" snout to tail length, offer him food once every other day or once every two days as much as he will eat per sitting.

I would not recommend mealworms as a staple - they are more of an occasional food. They are chitinous and have little nutrients.

He should receive a calcium supplement every other feeding.

He should receive a vitamin supplement once a week.

Re: How Much to Feed My Dragon?

Today I got my first water dragon, ive been doing research and looking through these forums for a while now. I was going to make the exact same post as AHStanford did about how much to feed, after I set him up I threw in about 15 medium/large crix and quite a few mealworms with some greens and some apple. Herman (thats my dragon ) doesnt seem to care to much for the worms, he chowed down about 12 of the crix and some of then greens and apple. He looked a little underfed when I got him was kind of skinny, I left the last few crix in there with him and over the next like 3 hours he gobbled them down too. just wondering if this is normal or did the people I just got him from starve him. Hes roughly 1' snout to tail length. Just wondering if im being over protective or if everything is normal.
