Re: New Dragon..

Thanks DP! Did not have that website... I do now. Will have to order on-line. All of the local stores carry the two brands by reptocal that include D3. Both tanks have the UVB but still, better safe than sorry.

Neither one of my dragons will eat veggies or fruits. I am ordering worms tonite to see if they will eat those. Currently it is just crickets that are gut-loaded or dusted and mealworms. (They only get mealworms once a week...they love them!) Cass ate his first pinkie this past week. Figured he could have those once a week as well. Drago didn't eat hers...she only likes stuff that moves...lol

Here are examples of calcium supplements without vitamin D3 and without phosphorus:
Rep-Cal Supplements
JurassiPet. JurassiCal
Zoo Med Repti Calcium WITHOUT D3

Human calcium supplements can be used (from what I have heard), but I would suppose that they are more expensive?

Dragons will rarely eat fruits, vegetables, or greens. Mealworms (chitinous with little nutrients) and waxworms (fatty and possibly addictive) should be offered only occasionally. Crickets may be used as a staple food, but dragons often get bored of them, so be ready with other food sources if that occurs. Variety is key to a healthy animal.

No need to panic. Vitamin D3 is advised against in supplements because it can be overdone and harm the dragon. Dragons make their own vitamin D3 with UVB; as long as a UVB source is available to the dragon, it can regulate the vitamin itself.
I am only monitoring the one spot with one thermometer, and it's near the basking zone on the hot side of the tank and I try to keep it reading 85-90. I also have the recommended infrared temp gun, but have not been using it.

Thanks for the info on supplements, I'm going to try and get him the calcium ASAP. How long can he do without? I mean, I'm feeding him, but no supplements.

Also - He has been rubbing his nose a lot in his tank so I put paper on the sides and it didn't help any. I've tried to reduce reflection and everything. I hope he doesn't get snout damage.

He should be okay for a short while, but get the calcium as soon as possible.

Time to upgrade the enclosure size. Covering the sides is not going to do much if the enclosure is small. Snout rub is best deterred with a large enclosure.

You want to stop it before he damages his snout too far as it can lead to mouth rot.

Thanks for the info again.

I found calcium locally without D3 at the PETCO. Of course, the "reptile expert" and dragon owner that works there said to get the one with D3, and when I told her he already had a UVB light, she looked befuddled. Lol. Link to the calcium: 8oz Zilla Reptile Calcium Supplement

As for the tank, I think when you do the actually ratio of size to enclosure he is fine for now, as the ratio is about even with his adult length and adult cage ratio. I bought aquarium siding to put on the sides, hopefully that will stop him. He has room in there, he just sees his reflection sometimes and fights it, I think.

Anyway, I'm still working on getting a better enclosure but I'm about broke from the $500-$600 I spent over the last week to get him.

My step dad works at a factory that uses large amounts of top-notch quality plywood on a daily basis and he has access to the scraps free. He said he could bring home wood constantly once I have drawn out a good cage to build for him and we can do it with the scrap wood. I need to build a plan for a enclosure that will fit in my room but still give him enough space. I don't mind giving him vertical room, but the floor space available in my room is not much, so it would have to be like 4 feet long and 2 feet deep or maybe 5x2 but not too big.

Re: New Dragon..

if you could do 4 long by 2 deep by 6 tall, that would be good too.

Re: New Dragon..

4'L x 2'W or 5'L x 2'W will do. Height is most important.

Lucky you to have access to good, free wood!

Re: New Dragon..

No crap.

Well, I have a new question, but I'm going to make a new thread for it, as this thread is a little off topic becoming my personal FAQ more than a new dragon thread.
