Decided to Seperate
Well I think I am going to seperate the basilisk from the water dragon but the only thing I can do for a bit is to put one in a reptarium till I get another tank. Who do you think would benefit the tank more the basilisk or the water dragon. My water dragon looks sad the past two days. And the basilisk has started to bob his head every night. So for the safety of my pets I am going to seperate.

Re: Decided to Seperate
Good idea. It's never recommended to keep two different species together. A lot of bad things can result.
What's the size of the tank you have them in now? Care sheets I've seen recommend a 55 g tank for a basilisk. A water dragon needs a much different enclosure. It needs to be larger, and very tall so that the water dragon can climb. If it's temporary, my opinion would be to move the water dragon to the reptarium until you can build a nice large enclosure for him. Since they both need similar temperatures and humidity, it makes more sense to keep the basilisk in the tank if it's better suited for him. The water dragon will survive in the reptarium, you just need to make sure that he has as high temperatures as you can manage, and a large water source. Soaking him in a bath tub daily while he can't get the humidity he needs will help a lot.

Re: Decided to Seperate
good plan. what is the size l x w x h of your current custom tank? That might help decide who to build the next enclosure for.

Re: Decided to Seperate
the waterdragon is then who you need to build for. we suggest a MINIMUM of 6 feet wide x 4 feet tall by 2 feet deep. Taller is better, so if you could go 6 feet high that would be great.
Your current tank is roughly 67 gallons.

Re: Decided to Seperate
Wow, that is way to tiny for either one of them to live in and you have both of them in there now?

Re: Decided to Seperate
Well they are seperated. Grover the water dragon is in a 4 foot tall reptarium and seems quite happy. Kermit is in the tank. This is not a fish tank it is a tank with sliding doors in the front. Grover has to have alot of furnishings added like a bigger pool, and more branches. I have to get him a new uv. So what kind should I get him. I would like to put it hanging inside the reptarium but I will have to figure that out. I have black plastic piping around the ceiling so maybe I can hang it from that somehow. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Decided to Seperate
hands down the light to get is a mercury vapor bulb from Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-Ray® UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide
It will last you a full year over a standard tube. I'd hang it inside if you can rig it. be sure to put a cage around it so your critter doesn't get burned.

Re: Decided to Seperate
Congrats on putting your lizards physical and mental health first.
You can't watch them 24-7, but if you want to have them out together for supervised time it would be just fine as long as everyone behaves. Liz gave you a good link, but be careful, they get hot! I use them for all of my UVB needing lizards, the difference from the uvb tube lights is amazing. |
