Looking Out the Window

I just moved my aquarium in front of my living room window. My basilisk and water dragon love to look outside and have the natural sun shine in their cage.

Re: Looking Out the Window

you just REALLY need to keep an eye on the temps. Sunlight coming through the glass window plus the glass aquarium is going to be magnified and raise the temp in the tank drastically. Either move the tank away from the window(best) or keep a close eye on it at all times(not great but ok)....

Re: Looking Out the Window

its really not recommended to put the terrarium in front of the window especialy with tropical set ups as the sun will probably warm the enclosure and there is no way you can keep a normal level of humidity.
also, the glass filters all the uv.
why did u move it there in the first place? only for the light?

Agreed - glass magnifies heat and can burn a reptile, and UVB cannot pass through glass so be sure you have a UVB light.

You keep a basilisk and water dragon together in a fish tank? No, no... These two species may have similar care requirements, but they cannot be kept together in a fish tank. To properly house them together, you need a LARGE and tall enclosure (not a fish tank) with multiple basking spots, multiple water areas etc. to prevent territorial aggression (and even this may not prevent it), and an extra enclosure handy in case of trouble.

Re: Looking Out the Window

I"m going to guess they are tiny babies.... that won't last long. As they get bigger, they won't be such good friends.

Re: Looking Out the Window

They are both a year and a half and have been togehter for over a year. They sleep together in a rock cave, they lick each others face, they sit together and on top of each other, they are always together. The uv light is still on top of the cage and the sun is not that bright that it is going to heat up the cage. The main reason I put them there is they like to look out the window.

Thanks

You are looking at their behavior as human behavior. They are not humans, they are lizards. Their behavior has different meaning - be careful not interpret it as human behavior.

They sleep in the same area because they both want to be in the area at the same time; not because they are "friends".

Licking is simply tasting the environment. It is not dog-like kissing if that is what you are thinking.

Laying on top of one another is either a sign of dominance or of both animals wanting to be in the same spot. It is not "cuddling" or "snuggling".

What is the size of that tank? They are FAR too old to be kept together in a fish tank. Like I said: "...you need a LARGE and tall enclosure (not a fish tank) with multiple basking spots, multiple water areas etc. to prevent territorial aggression (and even this may not prevent it), and an extra enclosure handy in case of trouble" - plus plenty of money on hand.

Re: Looking Out the Window

Your wrong. I bet I have the most contact with my reptiles than anyone here. I am home all day and watch for any signs of aggression because of them being 2 different species. They sit together all the time. They have 2 basking spots, and they are always together under the same one. One goes in the pool the other one follows. Why cant it be because they enjoy each others company. They are not stuck in a little wee tank their tank has plenty of room. I know when they are full grown they will need a bigger one but don't say they do this because of this. They have been together since they were both tiny and have never even tried to hurt each other. So give me a break.

Re: Looking Out the Window

Most of us here are only trying to help you to point out any possible problems you can, or will have with your animals.

What are the dimensions on the tank? If you plan on keeping both animals in the same tank regardless of what we all think, Perhaps we can give you some feedback about what to do to avoid any problems that may arise, maybe even some tips on setting up a great permanant home for both of them at an affordable price.
