Reptariums
What does everyone think of reptariums for the summer. I put mine in a rep for the summer and a vivarium for the winter. If you dont know what a reptarium is it is a totally mesh cage. Mine love it because they can climb up and down the walls. I go to dollarrama and put lots of fake vines in. They have a pool and lots of things to climb on. I am just getting it started now for summer.

Re: Reptariums
The main problem you are going to have with a reptarium is keeping the heat and humidity up.

Re: Reptariums
Agreed, they will work in some climates but not so well in others. Especially outside, it may seem hot but the wind can drop the temp quite drastically. Definitely good to get the herps some natural sunlight though.

Re: Reptariums
Yes true, thats why they are only in it in the summer when its really hot out. I put them in the backyard in the sun too with a little shower running they love it. The sun is true uv.
Thanks Mary

Re: Reptariums
Just remember that they don't really like change - especially in their environment. It upsets and scares them. So you have to watch carefully for signs of stress. Sometimes all that climbing and activity is not fun, but a freak out, trying to get back to familiar territory.
Also if the reptarium mesh is too fine, they may not actually be getting that wonderful UV.
But I often take my animals out for awhile during nice days in the summer. It definitely benefits them.

this actually is not true. the only reason it FEELs cooler to you and I is becasue of the mosture on our skin. the mosture absorbes the heat out of your skin (trying to create an a teperature gradiant equilibreum). The evaporation of this mosture carries heat away, and thus makes the wind feel cooler. I don't think that a reptile will be as affected by wind since they hold very little mosture on top of thier skin.
sorry, a little off topic, but good to know!

Re: Reptariums
Ira loves his outings to the beach and the pond near where we live, he gets to swim and chill out in the sun (before anyone thinks I am letting him swim in salt water, I have a HUGE dog crate for him to sit in at the beach and I don't let him play in sand, and swimming is always done with leash attached in fresh water)

Re: Reptariums
just be sure you give him access to shade too. If you could put the reptarium half sun/half shade that would be ideal!
