He Vs. She

Talk about your Mother Nature dilema! lol

I adopted my two water dragons in July of 2007. I was hoping to get a girl and a boy so I could have some babies down the road. Read all of the books I could get my hands on...wanted to be able to make good choices and take care of my dragons the right way. Did not know anyone with a dragon...so I relied on the pet store to help me alot. Had no idea that this website exsisted...just getting into the whole "computer surfing thing".

Anyways, Drago and Cassie were little, and they had plenty of room to run, climb and hide in their 4 ft. tank. From the names that I gave them, you can kinda guess as to what I thought their genders were. lol After about a month, Drago started getting "bossy" with Cassie. He would chase her from the basking light...even though they each had their own. Drago would also hog alot of the food...so I had to pull Cassie out and feed her in a spare tank that I kept around for cleaning time. Drago was going through a shedding a month but Cassie was very slow in growing and I was getting a little worried. The final straw was when Drago started keeping Cassie in the water pond all of the time. I came home from work and truely thought she was dead. Cassie was so cold and stiff. It took me about 30 minutes to warm her up in my hands, wrapping her in a bath towel and cradleing her like a baby to get her warm again. I bought another tank and put her in her own home. I thought they were a little young to be going through mating dominance...but what did I know?! I would rather not have babies than to lose Cassie to Dragos agressiveness. He even broke her little toe! Bully! Cassie has been going through a shedding every month since then and is growing nicely.

Now the catch! I just discovered that Drago is the female and Cassie is the male! Whoda thunk? It turns out that SHE was bullying HIM around! lol

In my computer/sewing room, I bring one of them in and let them run around. I would make them take turns cuz I did not want any fighting going on and one of them getting hurt. This was playtime...not self defense class. lol Well, yesterday I bought both of them in together to see what they would do. It turns out that Drago, "the bully" kept her distance and was the one running away from Cassie! lol Oh how the tides have turned! lol They got along pretty well...Cassie chased and Drago ran... No fighting at least...lol I am going to keep letting them "play" together under observation to see if they can be put back together in one habitat or not. Getting ready to make a bigger viv for them and, considering the size of it, I would like to have them together. The new viv construction starts this weekend. Measurements of the viv will be 6' x 6' x 3'.

Gonna take pictures of the construction process. Would love comments and suggestions!

Still hoping for babies...someday!

Re: He Vs. She

I am rearranging my entire dining room for the new enclosure...lol Who needs a dining room table when I am the only one eating?! lol Drago was sooo small when I got her. I thought I had time before I needed her bigger home. Wrong! lol I swear she shed every month..if not every 3 weeks. I wish I had known about this forum before I got them...then I would have built the enclosure first...but... the pet store said that I would have 2 years before they out grew their 4 foot tank...lol

Re: He Vs. She

For that matter, who needs drywall, when you could just build enclosures between all of those support columns in the wall...
And on that topic, whats the point of furniture that does'nt hold some type of animal enclosure, I mean come on, whats the point...
lol.
Not joking though, just the other day I was hanging out in my bedroom, and im kind of voicing my ideas out loud, and I was like,
"you know, if I got rid of that bed there, i could definitly fit a few more Animal enclosures in here..."

My Friend looked at me like I was crazy.
haha.

Re: He Vs. She

Lol...I agree! I am looking at my computer room(a spare bedroom) and thinking that I could turn this room into a "jungle gym" for my Dragons. They love to run around in here when I am on the computer, but they need something to climb on and really explore. I was looking at those "cat towers" in the pet store. Ya know, the ones covered with carpet? With the scrap lumber from my viv, I could build a multiple level play center here in this room! lol

My daughters think I am nuts! lol Speaking of nuts.. I have had, yet another, experience at the pet store while buying crickets. At the checkout, I put on the counter 24 cans of cat food, 100 crickets and 6 feeder minnows. The lady behind me asked me who I was feeding the crickets to. I told her that I had 4 lizards at home. She said, "You mean that your children have 4 lizards." Watching her face, when I told her that my children were grown and gone, was priceless! I guess, in her mind, women of my "age" were not supposed to be interested in such animals for pets. LOL I have never acted my age...why start now?
