Re: New with Water Dragon
If you just got him you need to give him at least a week or so to get adjusted to his new enviroment. A 40 gallon tank is not big enough for a water dragon. They need height. Here is our caresheet. Please take some time to read over it

Re: New with Water Dragon
Mine did that too. Did you get them from a pet store? They prolly just need to get used to human contact. It took mine about 2 to 3 weeks of handling them for about an hour or two a day. I started out by sitting on the carpet, so when they jumped off...it was a short and soft landing.

Re: New with Water Dragon
be sure its organic topsoil. That will help keep the humidity in. If you want to plant something, try a pothos right now. I wouldn't spend much money on your 40 gallon It won't last him very long at all and the space he will require as he gets old is pretty big. Start building!

Re: New with Water Dragon
if you have trouble keeping heat and humidity in put tinfoil over the top and mold it around the lights. it works great on my anole tank because it's shapeable and reflective. also make sure the thermometer and hygrometer you have are not the disk ones, they are notorious for breaking/ btw that plant taking over my tank is pothos, it's about 5 months old

Re: New with Water Dragon
i dont like how everyone keeps saying the 40 gallon is no good.... thats what i use for my two dragons and there fine....i havnt had problems with them running into the glass or anything...not that im saying bigger is bad but for the time being he should be fine...also you NEED UVB LIGHTING VERY IMPORTANT and bigger dish of water for him....if you can get a backround or make a back wall for the cage and side to help with stress....hmmm if thats a heating rock you may want to be careful with that cause it can burn your dragon if it malfunctions soo i would check it from time to time....for humidity i got the exo terra waterfall and fogger to help with that problem....i got lucking and only payed like 40 for the whole thing.....

Re: New with Water Dragon
A 40 is not sufficient. Maybe when they are babies but as they grow a water dragon needs height. They are climbers and spend little time on ground. They are arboreal lizards.
