Odd Behavior

ok, so last night an this morning Yoshi has been acting a bit funny. As I pick him up and put him BACK INTO his cage, he will start shaking his whole body, along with bobing of the head, and throat puffing. Now I know that bobing of the head, and throat puffing are defensive signals, but body shaking? it's almost as if he is having a sezure or something. It really freaked me out last night.

I also noticed that his stools are a bit soft and he is not going in his water dish anymore. I took him to the vet just 7 days ago, and he was in good health. I had a stool sample done and everything, nothing out of the ordinary came of the check up.

Temps seem to be ok, his enclosure is a bit cool (75ish), but his basking spot is still in the 90s. the humidity is around 60-70%, a bit low, I know. I bought a habba mister and got it in yesterday, so maybe that will help with the humidity.

So....oppinions on his body shaking, and irregular stools? Stress maybe?

Re: Odd Behavior

It could possibly be stress, this is not something Ive heard of before. Can you tell us about his diet? My only suggestion is to keep an eye on him for the next few days, maybe try to handle him as little as possible, keep track of how much he eats, his stool...etc..

Re: Odd Behavior

If it was shaking alone I would be real concerned, with the other symptoms I would agree with Sav and say it might be stress. Adding the mister yesterday might have disturbed his "normal" habitat, causing him to stress a bit.

His diet is mainly gut-loaded crickets. He loves them. Although, he didn't eat much yesterday, maybe 1 cricket. He ate two of them just this morning before I left for work. He usually eats 3-4 day. I also feed him gut-loaded meal worms, but he doesn't seem to like them very much. I try to give him veggies, but he doesn't seem to like them very much either. On occasion I will give him a wax worm, but he has yet to eat one. I'm thinking about throwing some earthworms in and seeing if he'll eat those.

Is there anything I should be looking out for specifically? In the mean time I guess i'll keep my hands off him and see if anything changes.

Re: Odd Behavior

Youre gonna want to make sure theres no changes in his diet, mainly loss of appetite, runny stool, anything out of the norm. As Ken said if it was shaking alone Id be really concerned as well, watch out for more shaking...if youre going to feed him earth worms make sure they are feeder quality, not the ones you get from a bait shop. Also gut load them for about 3-4 days before feeding them to your WD.

Re: Odd Behavior

Though I'd give you all an update.

He seems to be doing much better. I'm not sure why, but he is. I had another stool sample done just in case, and it turned up negative as well. He is eating MUCH more now. He ate 8 crickets yesterday, what a glutton! This in turn made for a very nasty water dish this morgning, but i'm happy he is going in the water dish now instead of wherever he feels like it.

I've kept handling down to a minimum, but he loves to jump out of his enclosure any chance he gets. I'm going to try starting to handle him a bit more, as I think he is starting to trust me. He ate 3 of the crickets yesterday (and 2 this morning) right out of my hand.

Well, for the time being he seems pretty content. Until I get his new enclosure built, then he'll be stressed again for a few weeks, until he realizes hes in a much larger enclosure. then he'll be the happiest lizard around!
