Water Dragons Mouth Open All the Time??
Ive had Cheif for about 8 months now and just recently ive noticed that he isnt eating as much and his mouth is slightly open all the time. It looks as if his gums are swollen and he cant close his mouth all the way? Is this mouth rot or what might it be? Please help me. Thanks

Re: Water Dragons Mouth Open All the Time??
My lizard does it all the time and as far as I can tell nothing is wrong with him. When you say it looks like his gums are swollen, can you describe it more? What color are they? Does he ever close his mouth? Also the set up of your tank might help. What size, temps, and humidity do you keep it at. What types of lights to you use? How long has it been since he's eaten and what do you feed him?
Yeah...think that covers it...

pics would help, but if his off his food and has his mouth partially open, it doesn't sound good. I'd get it checked out by a vet asap.

Sounds like a vet visit no matter what. We aren't going to be able to properly diagnose this for you, and even if we can, we probably can't treat it.
I'd take him to a reptile vet as soon as possible.

Is there any pus on the gums? Photos would help.
As was said, you should go to a reptile vet to figure out the problem and get a treatment for it if necessary. Note, a GOOD REPTILE vet.

The JD, do you mean mouth gaping? Mouth gaping can indicate a respiratory infection. Just a warning.

it could also be something less horrible, like the dragon trying to cool off. We really need the added information. Of course there is also the wonderful metabolic bone disease.

Gapping can also be a sign of temperature regulation. Do you see any yellowish subtance or white blotches on the gums? Thats also a sign of mouth rot.

He's not gasping for breath nor do I hear any weezing. He's still very active and has an apptite. He just sits with his mouth slightly open. This really didn't start happening until after I got him into his new viv with proper temps and humidity.

Re: Water Dragons Mouth Open All the Time??
My iguana will gape when stressed, when riding in the car especially if we go under an overpass he ducks and gapes. Could it be stress from a new environment? Does he have ample hiding places in the new viv? He might just feel exposed if he isn't showing any other symptoms.
