I purchased my Chinese Water Dragon last week from Petsmart. The lady informed me that the best substrate would be "bed a beast" This is what they use. When I got him home, it seemed like he got some in his right eye. We have been trying to flush his eye with water, but it doesn't seem to have gotten better. It also seems like there is still some "dirt" in the eye. What should we use to flush his eye? What should I do? Please help!! We had a bearded dragon that passed away last month and I'm so afraid of losing this one.

You can either try continued rinsing or you will need to take it to a vet for some assistance. You may also want to remove the substrate you have now and change it to paper towel or news paper until this problem is fixed.

yeah, a vet might have to go in there. Be sure you aren't mistaking natural coloring in the eye with substrate as well.

You can use turtle eye drops to clean the eye.

Is the bed-a-beast made of coconut fiber? Coconut fiber is known to be an eye irritant.

For substrate, bed-a-beast is a waste of money. You can use ordinary soil instead.

If using soil, be sure to either buy organic potting soil (potting soil that has no added chemicals to it). If you're going to dig up your own soil, it's advisable to bake it first. There's a lot in soil besides just dirt. You want to kill off any fungus, parasites, or anything else unpleasant that's in it.

i wouldnt panic too much about it jsut get him to wash his eye in water and it should be good in a week... the same problem happened to my water dragon when I first got her...change to organic soil or dirt and compacted soo it doesnt get kicked up in his eye again....if it doesnt start to get better within a week you should have him checked... good luck

I use green carpet in my tanks. It is easy to wipe up because they do most of their pooping in the water. I have heard of reptiles swallowing dirt and substrate when they eat crickets and binds them up.
