Re: Is this mouth rot?

If you decide to stick with a fluorescent tube light you will definitely need something stranger than a 2.0 light, 2.0 is definitely insufficient. Look for a bulb that is atleast a 5.0.
The best way to go is to check out Welcome To ReptileUV - Mega-RayŽ UVB lamps for reptile lighting worldwide and get a megaray.

Re: Is this mouth rot?

That does not look like mouth rot. Mouth rot develops inside the mouth on the gums; not on the outside like that. It also does not resemble the color and texture of mouth rot. Is it hard, soft? Looks like some kind of sore that should be checked out by a good reptile vet.

As for general husbandry...

As was said, your temperatures are too low. The day temperatures should be around:

Basking Spot: 90 - 95F
Warm Side: 84 - 88F
Cool Side: 75 - 80F

Night temperatures should not drop below 70F.

You can get another heat light, a stronger heat light instead, a heat emitter, or a mercury vapor bulb (MVB) as was mentioned.

For the UVB, the light you have is much too weak as was already said. For a UVB fluorescent tube light, the ZooMed ReptiSun 10.0 is the only UVB fluorescent tube light I would use currently. But better is the MVB which will boost your temperatures and give your dragon the UVB it needs. Reptileuv.com's MegaRay is an excellent MVB.

Re: Is this mouth rot?

in any case, first priority is to get him to a vet. There's no way we're going to be able to tell you how to fix it, and it's not going to get better on its own. You'll need to find a reptile vet (not a cat/dog vet that sees reptiles) and go as quickly as you can. That looks painful.

A good reptile vet can also help you with your husbandry. Aside from the suggestions here, give your vet a complete summary of how you are currently caring for him. He or she will be able to give you tips on any improvements that need to be made, and also be helpful in showing you what you are doing right.

I hope he starts feeling better.

Re: Is this mouth rot?

UPDATE!!!

We took Bruce to the vet this morning, and he did, in fact, have minor mouth rot. The sore-looking thing on the side of his mouth was actually pus dripping. Apparently they have very thick pus. We luckily caught the mouth rot in the very early stages and only require a topical treatment of antibiotics. I also swung by the pet store, and got a better UVB bulb and heat lamp (The vet said the mouth rot could have been caused by insufficient UVB). He never stopped eating, but ate a lot more today after his office visit, where they cleaned off the pus and administered his first dosage of meds.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Is this mouth rot?

Interesting that is turned out to be mouth rot. Usually the mouth rot pus stays within the mouth, is soft and a white-yellow color; and perhaps bulges out, but I have never heard of it leaking out like that (but then again, I have never heard of many things). That would explain why it appears crusty and dry.

Well, anyways, good luck with the dragon! Mouth rot can unfortunately be a pain to treat.

Also, for the UVB, you do not have to buy it from petstores. Petstores have ridiculous prices on UVB lights. For example, the ZooMed ReptiSun 10.0 costs 40-50$ at petstores while online you can buy the same light for 20$ plus a little shipping. Saves you a good chunk of money for other dragon needs. Such online reptile stores include bigappleherp.com and lllreptile.com.

Re: Is this mouth rot?

Well Moshpitrockchick recommended ReptileUV, but after going to the vet, I just could not let Bruce wait for something to ship (I nearly cried seeing him squirm when the vet was getting the puss off- I'm apparently gonna be the mother that cries every time she takes her kid to the doc).

I want to wait for my fiance to build him a proper cage, his current one is obviously not big enough after he starts growing, before I get the MegaRay, I think its too much power for the smaller tank at this point- they said too much could actually burn the little guy. (Again, the tank is only 4x2x2.5)

yes, but what did you get? And I'm glad you will be upgrading to a mega ray when you get a bigger enclosure, although the mega ray comes in different wattage.

BE SURE to get those temps up! If you are worried about your guys getting burnt, get a wire cage to go around the light so they can't reach it.

Also, be sure your wire top has spaces bigger than 1/4 inch. If they are smaller, none of your UVB is getting through to your little dude.
