Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
My Buckbeak died this morning and had no outward signs of illness. I found him half way in his water dish and his head was under water--it was so horrifying to find him this way. It appears at first glance that he drowned, but, he had been under water before this seems unlikely to be the cause and I cannot understand what happened and I am devasted.
I had a gut instinct last night and premonitions (runs in my family) and I shrugged it off. He had made a gagging or choking movement shortly before he went to sleep, but woke up normal and alert and was eating crickets and I found him a few hours later in his water dead. Has anyone ever had this happen? What could be the cause of such a sudden death? I can't seem to find any comfort. |

Re: Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
How old was he? Even people have very unexpected deaths that no one can see before it happens. I can relate. I lost my favorite frog unexpectedly one morning.
so sorry for your loss. **hugs**

Re: Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
Sorry for your loss.
There is often no way to know for sure what caused the death of an otherwise healthy-looking animal. If you need to find out, most herp vets can do a necropsy if the animal has not been dead long and if kept refridgerated (not frozen). There are no guarantees that they find the real cause either. But if they do find something, it could be a relief. I had a necropsy done on my rainbow boa female when she died unexpectedly. It was interesting and I discovered she had had a terrible infection caused by not completely re-absorbed eggs. There was no way for me to know and nothing I could have done. Sorry about your dragon. Most of us here can sympathize.

Re: Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
Sorry to hear about your loss. If you intend on getting another WD. I would highly recommend looking into the cause of his death. Not only will it give you peace of mind. But will be a valuable source of info for you in future endeavours. Again sorry to hear about this.

Re: Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. With the sort of choking thing, it could have been aspirations into the lungs of a bit of fluid or food. He also could have had something else go wrong. The vet might be able to tell you. When my baby ball python died we took him in to the vet, as we wanted to make sure there was no illness that would affect our other ball.

Re: Water Dragon died suddenly, unexpectedly
Sorry for your loss, sometimes in nature these things happen unexplained, but a vet may be able to give you answers and closure
