Taming the Dragon

Yes, another question. How do I go about getting Monty used to us? He seems to be adjusting to his new home. Yesterday, when I went to mist his cage, he didn't take off to his hiding spot. He Just sat there and stared at me. He's been getting better at not getting scared when we simply walk by the cage, as long as we don't come up too quickly.

I was thinking maybe start off simply petting/stroking him to get him used to us, and then once he is fine with that, try to pick him up and let him sit in my hand? I know when I brought him home, he didn't have a problem with me picking him up and putting him in his new home.

Re: Taming the Dragon

As I write this with Zena sitting on me, tellin.g me how neglected she feels, I think of all my reps and their various behaviour differences. A lot of people have said to give them 2 weeks in their new surroundings before handling, I have done this with some of them. The Columbian Tegu, the Savannah Monitor, the Boa and the Jungle-carpet x diamond python, and ball pythons all wanted to be handled right away. They crave the attention. The other reps all needed some "space" to adjust to their new surroundings. Our parrot also needed time to "rehome" before being handled.

Ok, so just see how much he is willing to tolerate me and work at his pace?

Re: Taming the Dragon

Definitely. It takes a lot of time and patience. That he doesn't go running for his hide at the first sight of you is a good sign. You may want to start with just being in the room with him, working, doing whatever. Once he's fully comfortable with you being around, you can start holding him a little at a time. Keep it short at first, and then graduate to longer or more frequent periods of time when you hold him.

Just remember that he has to feel safe. So gently holding him in a quiet place is probably the best way to start.

Like I said, it just takes time and patience.

Re: Taming the Dragon

hey welcome yeah this would be the easiest way to tame him this works the best for me change out his cage a clean it with him in their and always talk to him
i would put my hand in front of him giving him the option of climbing on for a couple times
then put it two front hands on your hand and lift he should jump right on and climb onto your shoulder dont be startled though
only hold him for about 1-2 minutes then gradully hold him longer
during his whole process always talk to him he should respond by looking at you and moving his head
before handling him spray him to comfort him hope that will do it it works for me

Re: Taming the Dragon

Emmie was a little startled at first - when I brought her home as a hatchling. But, in no time - she learned to scratch at the door of her mesh terrarium (knowing right where the zipper is) until I'd open it and take her out to hold her. She constantly wants to be with me. She is harness trained too - so, she can go to petsmart with me. She falls asleep on my chest or shoulder and sometimes it feels like waiting for a baby to fall asleep. If I put her back in her cage - she wakes right up and runs to the door again. Geez. Also, I got her and Zoey a big plastic kiddie pool (with colorful fish on it). I fill it up in the evenings. I sit in my chair while they have a nice swim - and often fall asleep right in the pool. They are very social... I must admit I was not entirely prepared for the bond that I would share with a dragon when I first got one. It is much like taking care of my dog and my ferret... not at all like keeping a fish.
