Odd Eating pattern

Hi everyone I was hoping someone could give me some advice with my WD. Judging by his size (8 1/2 inches) he's about 6 months old and I've had him for a month. He seems happy in his home but he just has had some odd eating periods. Some days he'll eat up to 5 mealworms and other days he'll eat absolutely nothing. We offer him fresh food every day but he won't touch the crickets and dosn't seem to like his waxworms either (he only gets those roughly once a week). I was just wondering if this was normal or if there was something that could be wrong. Thanks for your help.

Re: Odd Eating pattern

sounds like he is a picky eater to me! some days my critters can't get enough to eat, some days one or two crickets is all they want. They will eat if they are hungry. all my guys eat crickets, only two will eat nightcrawlers, and only 3 will eat waxworms. I mean, I hate mushrooms but my husband loves them. Picky eater

Re: Odd Eating pattern

Water Dragons are notoriously picky, and he's still in the adjustment period. Don't panic. If you keep offering food, he'll eventually take it. He just has to feel safe and secure first. It may be less his appetite, and more his fear of you and trying to adjust to his new living quarters.

Make sure he's in a quiet place of the house, and try not to handle him any more than necessary for a little bit. Once he feels his home is completely secure, he'll start eating regularly - and with an appetite!

Crickets - especially if they're noisy - may actually be a little too disturbing for him for a little while, so offering him mealworms is definitely a good way to go. Offering him veggies too is good, though don't be discouraged if he doesn't seem to want them. Mine never ate veggies ever. You've said you feed him waxworms only sparingly. Definitely a good way to go with it. You won't want to give him those too often.

Re: Odd Eating pattern

I havent offered him any vegetables yet but maybe I will try that tonight. I heard that they sometimes really like cantalope and I got one the other day so I'll try that as well and let you know how it goes.

Re: Odd Eating pattern

Well fruit should also only be a treat and not a staple. You'll only want to feed him that occassionally.

I really think, though, that he's just trying to adjust. Giving him a little time and space will probably make all the difference.

Thanks for the list. we're going to offer him some carrots tonight and then maybe in another week or so we'll try something else and see what he might like.
