Re: mealworms

I move this thread to the feeder forum.
Follow the link she gave you. It fully describes in detail how to breed them.

Re: mealworms

The link you were given spells it all out.
It would be redundant to write up an entire post that says the exact same thing as the page you have the link to.
If you have a specific question or need clarification on any point we will be glad to answer it and start a discussion from there.

Well, it has been a few years (well ok 30 years to be exact ) since I last bred my own mealworms, but I am in the process of doing it once again, my method that I originally used was very successful, and simple.

Here goes, I live in an area with average humidity of around 60 -90 % (don't know if it makes a difference but helps for a bit of back ground), anyways, all I ever did with mine was put a inch and a half of all bran/crushed up bran flakes mixed with uncooked oat meal (not the ready to serve/instant stuff, but the real raw oats like granny used to make) in a three pound margarine container and ump in my worms, punch a few holes in the top of the container to allow for ventilation, and left them on a shelf at room temperature.

And that was it, after a couple of weeks I would start to notice some of them changing from the larvae to the pupae stage and then into adult beetles, and low an behold if the little buggers didn't take care of propagating the species for me I mention the humidity of my area, as the article linked to above, talks about adding a bit of carrot to help keep the moisture up. That was never a problem for me.

So I am once again trying the same method right now with some meal worms that I just purchased this past weekend, we'll see what happens with that.

Re: mealworms

Adding the carrot for moisture is important. Without it they end up cannabalizing each other for the moisture they need and it will reduce your production.

And if you want to get real serious about it, go down to the local feed and grain. You can get a 50# bag of wheat bran for about what 2 boxes of cereal will cost you.

My colony consists of 4 shoe boxes on a rotation that keeps up with 2 adult bearded dragons and a leopard gecko
