Re: vet check up

well as far as I know the 40 bucks basically gets you in the door,, testing and so on is additional fees to the initail checkup. I have always paid extra for any reptile panels,,,meds,,and various tests. I dont know anyone who hasnt. THe blood work and such is always extra because most have to send them out to a lab.

On another note I am sorry you feel we are rude,, It is definaely not meant that way. With everything you were describing in all your posts,, your animal definately needs a vet and we cannot help out with that as we are not vets. We can tell you a little about the experiences we have had in the many years of herp keeping and rescue, but that still does not qualify us as a vet. I have seen many things come in here in the shape you have described and have always required vet care to even begin to think about a recovery,, and unfortunately there is not always a recovery Time is of the utmost importance when you are dealing with really ill reptiles that need.

Good luck at the vet,,, and your dragon is in my thoughts...........

Re: vet check up

I always say better safe than sorry, plus you should always bring a new pet to the vet just to get a baseline and good rapport set up with the vet incase the time comes where you have an emergency you will have someone you can trust.

$40 is probably just for an office call, anything else will cost extra, and depending what it is it can get expensive. (A full blood pannel, which I recommend getting every other year or so can run around $75)

Also i'm sorry that you think we are rude, but you weren't very forth coming with information. You can try another site, but you will find we are the most polite herp site on the net. We pride ourselves on it.

Re: vet check up

I am a vet assistant. An office call is just a general health check. Anything beyond that, IE: blood drawn, fluids, cultures, antibiotics, bandaging, lancing, stitching, surgery, anything that takes extra effort is usually charged for.

It's just part of owning an animal. I make sure I set aside a little extra each month, that way when something does come up I can recover from the shock of a high vet bill.

Exotic pets are a 'specialist' thing and you pay out the nose for it because there just aren't many good exotic vets.

Re: vet check up

Lacey is right,,that is just an office call. I have been doing rescue for years and have always had to pay for the "extras". It is just part of owning reptiles. You always pay more for the exotics. But then again it is hard to find a good exotic vet,, so the money is worth it.

I can tell you in my experience I have paid in the excess of thousands to have surgeries and emergency care done. But these were excessive cases, where the animal was really ill and required extensive hospitalization.

Godd luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: vet check up

I myself would personally get a reptile panel done. They will also listen to him, and will liusten to him breathe and such. They will also check for mouth rot, or upper respitory. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions about your husbandry and his diet. Most problems can be prevented with proper husbandry and diet. I am not saying there is anything wrong with yours,, but that is how they check to make sure it is not something that cant be corrected with a few changes.
