Re: vet check up

Also make sure you have chossen a vet who specializes in reptiles, otherwise you'll know more than they do and feel like you wasted your money.

Generally what they might do is weigh him, ask you a TON of questions, listen to his heart and breathing, check out his eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and make sure his color is alright and check all of his joints and toes and tail tip and things like that.

It is alot like a visit to the doctor minus the tail checking thing

Re: vet check up

just to reiterate what everyone else said, we don't mean to be rude, but more to the point in what we think you need, and its always for the best of the animal. It frustrates us to no end when people have animals and refuse to get them the proper vet care. A pet is a living creature, be it a frog, lizard, cat, dog, llama, horse or elephant. They all deserve the same treatment.

I know I also got very frustrated with your posts because they are very hard to read. I really don't want to sound rude, but could you try a little harder to form proper sentences and use good punctuation? It might make our mood a little better when trying to help out.

Re: vet check up

A reptile panel is spendy. It runs me about 95.00 each one. As long as the vet is an exotics vet, they will know what they are doing. It will tell you how his kidneys and such are functioning. It is a really good thing to have done when the animal is showing as many signs as your is.

Re: vet check up

I believe Lacey mentioned she has it done every other year or so? She has the right idea.

It's a really good thing to have done on a regular basis, because reptiles, by their nature, don't let on that they're sick until it's really late in the game. After all, in the wild, being sick leads to being dead. A thorough check-up can catch all sorts of problems really early - when it will be much less expensive for you to treat.

Along that note - it's a really good idea to keep some sort of system so that you can set aside money for vet visits, medicine, or anything that comes up. I try to keep an envelope and put a set amount in it once a month. Then when it comes time for their annual visits, or if they get sick, or if one of their bulbs blow or something, I can use that money without worry about throwing my budget off. It's really helpful.

Re: vet check up

i just got pair of water dragons not too long ago and LEO(the biggest one) was sitting around with his mouth open all the time

i just paid very close attention to the temperatures and noticed the basking side was getting way too hot(thanks for the advice guys ) so I changed to a smaller bulb which keeps the tank perfect

i also added alot of branches and places to hide in case he was opening his mouth as a territorial thing, to give little lola(smaller one) some options if that were the case

And to be honest I am not sure which one of these 2 changes did the trick, but I have never seen him sit there with his mouth open since

*******I AM NOT IN ANY WAY STATING THEY SHOULD NOT BE CHECKED BY A VET JUST TELLING YOU WHAT WORKED FOR MINE************

AS MINE HAVE TO GO SEE THE DOCTOR FOR THERE 1ST CHECK UP VERY VERY SOON

Re: vet check up

Hi, just thought i'd put in my little knowledge. My experience in exotics vets is that the general "walk in the door" fees are between $45 to $75 in our area. Any medication or testing is extra. Even my dog & cat vet is $35 to $45 to walk in the door. My sheep and horse vets are $35 for farm call and $1 per minute that they're here plus medication and tests. Veterinary school is a long drawn out expensive process, especially for exotics, and we are paying for their knowledge. I know sometimes it seems frustrating when they can't give an answer right away. We live in an area where we have Michigan State University's veterinary campus an hour away, and many vets here trained there. My youngest daughter just started pre-vet this year. my older daughter began 8 years ago in pre-vet, but changed her major to Public Health Epidemiology and Toxicology, food safety. She is still interested in rabies and west nile virus studies. She helps catch frogs in the spring for studies on the effects of what is in the environment. I'm getting a little off topic, but just saying veterinarians have put a lot of time and effort into their learning and most enter the workforce with thousands of dollars in school loans to be paid off. I hate the high prices involved as much as the next person. you do have to watch for the unethical vets who like to add a lot of tests for no good reason. We have a couple of those in our area when it comes to horses. It almost sound like you guy is either being extremely defensive or is becoming respiratory. If it is respiratory, increasing humidity and heat will help a great deal, but he would also need some antibiotic therapy. Good luck with him. I have had my share of ups and downs with lizards, several came to me extremely ill, others carriers. I wish you much luck, try to find a good vet.

Re: vet check up

wow, posts have been lively since I was away Honestly everyone here is reiterating the same thing, you should take your WD to a qualified Herp Vet. There is a reason everyone is agreeing, it's not because they are pushing you off or ignoring you, but because lizards are fragile, they get sick and you don't know it. They will show little or no symptoms until it's to late. The first thing I do when I get a new animal, whether it is a dog, a cat, a guinea pig, a lizard, a rat, or a horse, is take them to the vet. If you have specific questions about how much the office visit is, or how much additional procedures are such as a reptile panel or a fecal check for parasites (which I recommend) I suggest you call your local Vet and ask how much it is and what it entails. That's just part of being a responsible pet owner. Good luck with your little ones.
