Just some pics

Just thought I'd post some pics of the new baby's. Enjoy.....

There are more in my gallery under my screen name.

I have a question I can't answer myself.......do the baby's gape their mouths to cool off? It's really hot in Edmonton right now (33 celsius) so my house is boiling and I've switched the timer on the mega ray to go on for about half an hour and then off for an hour just so they can still get some UVB without getting roasted in the cage. Amazingly they still bask for a few minutes before cooling off in the waterfall or pond. But when they bask they open their mouths. I don't understand this. The basking spot is around 98 degrees
but there are areas in the cage that dip to around 83. Could it just be the UV their looking for?

Re: Just some pics

An open mouth can mean many things:

What are the temps in his enclosure? Gaping is sometimes used to try to lower the lizard's body temp when the animal is hyperthermic. Temperatures should range from (84-88F) with a basking spot of(90F), night time temperatures range from (75-80F).

Gaping can also be indicative of a respiratory infection, but is usually accompanied by some kind of discharge (bubbly, thick, discoloured, bloody, crust around the edges of the mouth and nostrils). A respiratory infection absolutely needs to be seen by a vet.

It could also be an aggressive display. Some WDs will gape and hiss if they feel threatened

hope this helps

ps they are little beauty's

Re: Just some pics

No discharge, must've just been coolin down. It's a tad cooler today and I haven't seen them gaping yet.
Thanks for the help

What are some of those more colorful plants you have set up in there?

Re: Just some pics

Those would be bromeliads. I have a couple in my tank, but are still to little/young to have the color.
