Diet Variations

Setsuko seems to be acting better, now that I've put some peat moss in a part of her tank. I also wandered to Petco, where I bought her, and spoke to Dawn - the manager. She's a good friend of mine, and owns dragons herself. She said Setsuko's too young to lay eggs, but she might be coming into her sexual maturity. She told me to cover half the tank, in case it was something in my room that was stressing her out, so I did. Dawn also suggested putting a fake plant behind the tank and letting Setsuko climb up it. I already had a huge fake tree back there, so now I open the back of her tank and let her climb up.

So, over the past couple days, she's been a lot more active and, while she still hides herself, she comes out on her own after about an hour. So! Now I have a new question.

I've heard and read that it's good for a dragon to have variations in their diet, so how would you go about introducing new food? I've tried to feed her bits of strawberries, and the only time I ever got her to eat a piece was by putting mealworms on top of the strawberries. When she ate the mealworm, the strawberry went with it. I've read somewhere that sometimes they might eat fish.. so I tried to give her a feeder fish, but she shunned it. I'm worried that she might not be getting enough nutrients.. I use calcium powder on the crickets, but is that enough? Crickets and mealworms seem to be the only things she'll eat.. and I'm not allowed to buy mealworms anymore after I bought a couple hundred from an online source and they got out and infested my bedroom.

Dawn suggested trying to feed her the pinkies? Dead baby mice... but Setsuko doesn't seem to go after anything unless it moves. Any suggestions?

if you take a look at the care sheet provided on this site, it gives you info on other foods you could possibly try, hope this helps

occasional pinky mouse shouldn't do any harm, but you shouldn't feed them all the time, they are very fattening, so are wax worms which should be fed in small amounts say once a week.

Do water dragons eat strawberries and other veg?? Some natural yoghurt might be good to add good bacteria into her gut flora, or alternatively try probiotics from http://www.reptileuv.com - we use this 2x per week with our lizards' food.

As for the pinkie mouse - try wiggling it with tweezers to immitate a live mouse, or try what I do with our dragons to get them to eat them: push the pinkie gently against the lips whilst wiggling it, and if they open their mouths throw it in

Why are you worried she isn't getting enough nutrients? - crickets and meal worms are fine as main parts of her diet, and supplementation with calcium is neccessary - however you also need to supplement once a week with multi-vitamins too,. how often do you supplement with calcium? You can also try her with other insects - wax worms, locusts, etc.

She sounds much better, I'm sure she will be fine. Just a note though - although on the whole a dragon may not be "old enough" to lay eggs, that doesn't neccessarily apply to all dragons. Animals are individuals like humans, and our bearded dragon laid her first eggs at 5 months old

Oh my.

I've read in the book I have, and on a caresheet that I got from a petsore, that it's okay for them to eat strawberries and carrots, among other things, and she seemed to do just fine when I had her eating them.. she just wouldn't eat it unless it moved first.

And I'm worried because I have a tendancy to be a worrywart, especially over my animals. "Oh noes! Deacon. Deacon isn't moving, WHY isn't he moving!? Deacon! DEACON!.... oh.. he was asleep..".. I've done that a number of times over my alaskan malamute.. and even my cat.. ".. dongwa? .. Dongwa!? ... DONGWA WHY DO YOU LOOK DEAD!?..." of course, he was just sleeping too. I have two rainbow sharks that don't move during the day, and I'm always afraid they're dead - even though I know that they won't move until I turn the light off.

I guess I worry so much because I've seen a dead horse before, while walking home from school, and I thought it was just sleeping until I saw the blood pooling under it's mouth. I'm scarred. So along with my other pets, anytime I see Setsuko not moving and her eyes are closed, I'm just scared that she's going to be dead and it'll be my fault.

I've also been told "crickets and mealworms aren't enough!" .. I use the calcium about twice a week, that's what I was told to do. Too much? Too little?

I'm always like that too with all my animals.

There is never too much calcium for them. No such thing as overeating (At least what i've been told, my dragons are obese beyond belief) There is a limit however, to mealworms. Their shells are filled with chitin (?) and could cause impaction, if eaten too big, or eaten too much. Crickets can be eaten by the thousands if needed, (lol) they have many nutrients that a dragon needs even without powder. and waxworms should be given just as a treat ever once in awhile (Maybe a once a month treat) Always powder though.

2x per week with calcium is enough, but you need to add multi-vits to the diet too.

You can overfeed lizards Bill,. you should be careful not to overfeed as obesity can cause many problems, and often is just as bad as under-feeding just in different ways.

Piankhi, it is better to over- worry than not be bothered at all - by worrying you are making sure that everything is just right for your animals, and that is a good thing! Just don't worry too much that you stress yourself out!!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou. I've had all these worries ever since I bought her, but I haven't ever had people to ask.. I feel so much better now!

-- I haven't actually fed her mealworms since the, er.. incident.. but before that, I gave maybe 3 to her a month... she seems to prefer crickets over everything else!

But since I am in a better mood and I feel like showing her off because she's my pretty:

That is VERY incorrect. Too much calcium will damage their organs and kill them. Same with vitamins. Some people go on the assumptions that if a little is good then a lot is better.
Too much supplementation is as bad or worse than none at all.
