third day with new dragon
Okay today is the third day with my dragon. I feel as if he is unhappy. First off I think the tank is to small. It is a 10 gallon. Sometimes he tries to run up the glass and get out. Is that because he needs more space? Or he is scared?
I don't think he has eaten yet. But, reading from other posts I see they don't eat for a week in a new home. Let me tell you guys what I have for my dragon. I have a 20x 10 x 12 10 gal glass tank eco earth compressed coconut substrate flukers clamp lamp 5.5" exoterra 60 w day rep pro spot lamp 60w exoterra 60w glow night light rep pro vitamax And I just purchased a tetra terrafauna hot block. I put it under the substrate in the tank. Is that okay? I bought some meal worms also. But my dragonite didn't eat any. Is it because he still needs time?I saw some poop in his water pool. So I'm guessing that is a good thing.. My dragon is very skinny I really want him to eat so he can grow.. During the day I have the tank in my garage with the day light lamp on and the temp is usually round 75 to 80 and the humid is 60-70. I only have one lamp at the time. When should I choose to use the basking light over the other ones?? Should I leave the heat block on all day? Oh, I also put some live branches with leaves from my lemon tree in the tank. Is that okay? And I'm practicing on taming my reptile is it to early? I found that talking, holding him the right way and holding him in the tank before taking him out has helped a lot. He fell asleep in my hand for a while today. ![]() Please give me your feedback. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks a lot! -Ed |

Re: third day with new dragon
I am pretty new at owning a WD, just about two weeks, but I would highly suggest you look up "Tricia's Water Dragon web site" Just google it, and have a look around. I think I have read the whole site by now and I am still learing, also you can look at Kapplan's web site. Both have invaluable info. They will tell you about what kind of enclosure, and how to hand feed if you need to and lighting and humidity needs, and all that. It is a really great web site. Good luck with the new addition.

Re: third day with new dragon
If you want a condensed version of tricias site, check out this link:
Chinese Water Dragon Caresheet Tricia wrote that for us when she was a staff member here. Melissa Kaplans site just repeats a great deal of what Trish has already written. (They are friends.) Hope that helps! |

Re: third day with new dragon
That tank is WAYYYYY too small for a water dragon.
Putting branches in the tank is fine as long as you can confirm there have been no pesticides placed on the tree or in the grass below. I have a friend with forest behind her that never gets any chemicals. I gather all my stuff from her.

Re: third day with new dragon
You definitely need bigger tank. 10 gl is way to small for a water dragon, even for a baby. They also need more heighth vs lenghth. You need to find out if the lemon leaves are toxic or not, it could make your dragon ill.

Re: third day with new dragon
You also need to stop handling the dragon and leave it be for a week or so and let it get settled in to the new home.
Do you not have a UVB bulb? This is a necessity.

Yes. My bulbs do have UVA rays. I know my tank is to small. I'm going to get it a bigger tank soon. I have a hard plastic container that's 10 gallons (21. 75''l x 15.25"w x 12" h) I can fit a screen on it. I was wondering if that would be good until I get a bigger tank????
Also should I leave the heat block on all day? |

Re: third day with new dragon
i don't want to give you the "mom" type lecture, but if you got a water dragon, you should have made sure you had the proper enclosure first. do whatever you can to give him more room.
