I don't have a cwd just have a question!!
I was at a pet store yesterday and they have a Water Dragon in a like 40 gal. rivertank. that is filled about 1/4 with water and then they have logs and this so it can come out of the water. Now I also had stopped at another pet store and they have the water dragon in a like 20 gal. high tank with the glass doors that open up outwards. With the sani-chips and logs and things and just a waterdish. Which way is better? Or Correct? I just found that interesting and was curious. I think they are soo cute so the one that needs a better home might get one! Haha

Neither? They should be in something that's about 3 or 4 feet long and 6 feet high. People usually get something like a kitty litter box or something else to have a little pool on one side of the tank and ground on the other. They enjoy water but I believe they mostly hang out on top which should have branches and stuff to climb? They need a lot of care and are more of a pain then a lot of reptiles but I believe it's totally worth it they're completely addorable if your going to take the time to look after it properly and feed them properly and clean out their tank properly which becomes more of a pain with the water and huge tank not to mention the variety of food they eat.!

Agree with the above. They need height vs width. They need climbing branches and and area of water big enough for them to get into. Most of the time if the sides are glass, people suggest to cover the back and sides because they see themselves and try to run thru the glass an they get snout damage.

Ok, thanks. Very helpful I appreciate it. I am def. going to inform the stores about this also. They are both little pet stores ya know like family run and things so I want to make sure they ar caring for them properly. I help them with there Bearded Dragons and the Leopard Geckos they had. So thanks again.

There was one pet shop I really enjoyed in town that kept reptiles and they had a whole wall set up as a enclosure for a iguana and it was really natural looking...why can't more places be like that.

Most pet shops aren't too concerned about proper housing for their animals. They're just concerned about getting them in and getting people to buy them. So they'll used whatever materials they have around, and put them in cages much too small for them. Most of the workers in pet shops, especially big ones, like Petsmart or Petco, don't know anything about most of the exotic animals. And care for each reptile can be drastically different from the next. Sometimes you can find a nice, well informed worker, but most are not going to go to the trouble of learning about each individual reptile.
So you can tell them that their display is incorrect, or that their animals are uncomfortable, but nine times out of ten, it's not going to change anything at all. They aren't interested in long term care, they just want you to see the animal and buy it. It's really kind of sad. |

I have a wide experience with herps and have kept some of the "often reguarded" hardest herps to keep with ease. I have also done things other people suggest against doing for health problems, and and have also done this for years, and still do, without a single incident.
In all three attempts in keeping Water Dragons, each died within a two month period. All 3 from seperate sellers, all at different times and all 3 were set up as reccomended by breeders, fellow keepers that agreed with natural set ups (That's all I'm about). Necropies were negative for anything suggestible. I'm impressed with the people who can house them effortlessly.. Especially one guy I know who has them in a basic 6'wx3'hx3'd for years. I don't like him very much....
