Uro only wants lettuce
I just got an Egyptian uromastyx..(not quite sure if its a male or female quite yet) I give it a variety of veggies but it only seems to eat the lettuce. I know that lettuce is calcium binding so what am I supposed to do?

Re: Mali Uro Eating Iguana Chow?
Quote:
Lettuce has practically zero nutritional value. A Uromastyx which only eats lettuce will begin to show signs of nutrional deficiencies sooner or later. Basically the animal is starving itself no matter how much lettuce it consumes. Do not add lettuce to the salad mix. If it is not available the Uro will be forced to eat the other more appropriate greens that should be provided in it's diet. |

Re: Uro only wants lettuce
It's not that lettuce is calcium binding.
The problem is, its cellulose and water! About as nutritious as a peice of styrofoam! If you don't give it, the uro can't eat it.

Re: Uro only wants lettuce
Stick to dark leafy greens of collard and mustard.

Re: Uro only wants lettuce
What other veggies should I give it?
Also I've heard from other Uro owners that mixing in turtle's dust and iguana's juvenile pellets with the salad is good for it. yes .. no? |

Re: Uro only wants lettuce
From our care sheet:
Uromastyx Caresheet - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database Uromastyx are Omnivorous. The majority of their diet consists of vegetables with the occasional insects as a treat. Vegetables include carrots, beans, peas, corn, mustard greens, bok choy, collard greens, parsnips, squash and dandelion flowers. You can also offer birdseed and finch pellets in to the vegetable mix. Make sure anything picked from a garden or yard is 100% pesticide and herbicide free. Veggies not to feed would be, spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard, cabbage and limit broccoli and kale, these tend to bind important nutrients or tend to induce metabolic problems overtime. Romaine lettuce and regular lettuce provide no nutritional value. Insects include: crickets, mealworms, superworms and waxworms. Insects should be used sparingly because of their kidneys inability to process large amounts of protein. All foods should be dusted with Vitamin D3 and calcium.
