Getting a Uro

I'm so exited.

Fell in love with an egyptian Uro.

Starting the process of setting up a home for him.

Any advice would be great!

Am I better getting a viv with sliding doors? or a tank with a lid at the top?

Whats the best things to offer for food? Any supplements?

Thanks in advance from a very excited "new mum" x

Re: Getting a Uro :)

Hi Cats...

1st thing I would recommend is a good book or 2 on Uro's, which will tell you which feeds are best and suitable and a ton of other info.

An egyptian is gonna get very large and will need a 6 ft x 5 ft viv 4 ft tall - by the time he has done growing.

Good plant foods u can grow are Hibiscus and Nasturtium - both of which both the flower and leaves are suitable for Uro's - as well as dandelion, robina and several clover species, among others.

Vegetables need to be high in calcium and low in phosphates
Suitable veg's include watercress - endive lettuce and curly kale.
Though as a general rule cabbage is not good - it is perfectly ok to use the very dark outer leaves of savoy cabbage - as well as chinese cabbage.
Also chikory, carrot, parsley, collard greens, turnip-greens, radiccio.

They need a great variety of foods in each meal - u shouldn't just provide 1 or 2 elements per meal.

They also need a constant supply of dry seeds which can comprise of ...
red and green lentils - brown rice - buckwheat - millet - safflower - clover - field peas (small green peas) - small grain corn, barley - vetch - hemp - oats.
Also beans - such as - soy - mung - lima - navy - white - and pinto.
Some say sunflower can be incorporated - others warn against the high fat content of these.

Uro's dont need water, but juveniles do - never give too much - just a few mm in a shallow wide dish will suffice.
With my juvies - I gave it such that by mid-day it had all evaporated.

Many species adults don't need animal matter, but they do as juveniles
but again - don't over-do animal matter - once or twice a week u can give juvies a few mealworm or small crickets.

Depending on your lighting, Uro's need calcium supplements - however with the zoo-med 12% UVA/UVB - zoo-med warn not to use supplement calcium or they will O.D. on calcium - both too much and too little Ca are pretty much just as bad as each other - but I think too much may be better than not enough.

As far as UV goes - natural sun (unhindered by glass) is best
As far as Calcium goes - try ensure your foods a high in Calcium and provide zoo-med UVA/UVB lighting a few hrs a day.

Regards
Lynx

Re: Getting a Uro :)

Wow thanks! That must have taken you ages!

I plan to get a flexarium to put outside when I am out there so he can get natural sunlight and be safe!

I'm so excited about getting him - but trying to be sensible and create his environment and make sure everything is 100% before he arrives!

Thanks again

Re: Getting a Uro :)

You're welcome hun

Naturally I had to refer to books for some of those seeds and vegies - as I have to all the time when wanting to buy any.

As far as viv sizes go - the best recommendation - uses the snout - vent - length (snout to vent length) of the species and suggest (as a minimum) 5x4x3 times snout to vent length which is where I get my measurements from.

I have 2 baby aegyptia too that are growing like crazy.

I also have 2 acanthinura. acanthinura
2 acanthinura. nigriventris
2 hardwickii
and a geryi

Am still very much a novice though started keeping Uro's less than a year ago - after my 1st sighting of a Dispar. maliensis

Oneday I will own them too --- one day.... one day .....
As with all the other species of Uro's I can lay my hands on

Good luck with yours Cats - and many happy years of that.

Regards
Lynx

Re: Getting a Uro :)

The place I have seen the Uro for sale is selling them at £135 is this about right? The price is irrelevant I just want a healthy Uro - is there any thing I should look at when I go to choose the Uro?

They seem very hard to come by, this is the only place near to where I am that has them in.

Are there any breeders on this site?

I just got a mali uro... i love er' alot!

As far as keeping them out side, I could imagine there being trouble with temps, you need to make sure that the basking surface is 110-120 degrees.

Also we have a great care sheet on the fourum. you should look at that.
