Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
Hi everyone! I'm new here, and getting my first Uromastyx tomorrow! YAY!!! I was wondering if you all could post some pics of your cage set ups, so I can get a good idea of what I want to do. What do you all suggest for the substrate? Sand, or what? Thanks everyone! And I promise to post my OWN pics, after I get it all together tomorrow!

Re: Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
If this is a newbie, you should start it out on papertowel or newspaper. How old is it? What size tank are you useing, lights, heat, etc.
Here is our caresheet too.. Uromastyx Caresheet - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database

Re: Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
I remember the day I picked up my boy. good news to hear. You need to know anything feel free to ask or send me mail. If your uro is 6 inches from nose to tail then paper towels or newspaper would be best. if it is over 6 inches washed and screened play sand is fine. here is a pic of my enclosure

Re: Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
well, I ended up getting two.... I didnt want them to be lonely..... lol anyway - I think the tank is almost 30 gallons, I have heat lamp, UV lamp, a hideout, and a basking rock for them. I'm still looking for more things to put in. As for right now, I bought mustard greens, cucumbers, Bok Choy, and carrots. I had also bought baby spinach, and romain, but then realized that the spinach cannot be fed to them, and that the romain has no value for them, so I guess I just get some GOOD salad for lunch this week! lol Any other pointers for me? I really want to set the cage up nice, but I'm not sure how... It just looks so bare! I had 2 heat rocks sitting around, which I DO know cant be used, so I cut the cords off of them, and put them in for climbing on. No damage, as long as they arent hot.

Re: Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
How big are the uros? The 30 gl would be big enough for one but not for two depending on the size. Is your UV lamp a UVB lamp? You dont want to put to much in at once. They are going to be stressed for the first week or so. Do you know the sexes of them. You cannot keep 2 males together, they will fight.

Re: Getting My First Uro Tomorrow!
They arent small, but they arent full grown either. Probably 6-7 inches rom nose, to where their tail starts. I *THINK* one is a female, and know that the other is a male. But they were already housed together, which is why I am keeping them together. If I start to notice them fight, or get irritated with each other, I will seperate them. They are doing great... They've been all over in there, and eating food right from my hand. They dont seem stressed at all. The heat lamp that I got with them was not strong enough, and they werent coming out of their hide spot, so I went this morning and bought a different one, so they're bask side is at 110 right now, and once it heated up, thay came out, and have stayed out. I'm not sure if its UV, or UVB... The man I got them from gave me everything for them, and none of it was boxed, so I really have no idea. The bulb says Zoo Med, reptl sun 2.0
I do plan to make a bigger enclosure, but this is what I got with them, so it has to do for now. Are reptariums okay for them? Or do they have to have glass? I have sugar gliders, and build my own repts for them, so if that would work for Uro's, I will do the same for them. |
