Uro Diet
I am going to get some plants from the house and garden. we have a couple dandylions, is the stem, yellow pettles etc alll edible and good for uromastyx, i have read it is?
Also can i feed daffodils, as we have 30+ in a varse in the kitchen? Also what treats can i feed my uromatyx. They seem to love seeds at the moment, and eat bit of lettuce from what i have seen. I have only had them for 2days. thanks |

Re: Uro Diet
have our Uro Care sheet. It covers diet.
Uromastyx Caresheet - Reptile Information - Caresheets Database Specifically it says: Uromastyx are Omnivorous. The majority of their diet consists of vegetables with the occasional insects as a treat. Vegetables include carrots, beans, peas, corn, mustard greens, bok choy, collard greens, parsnips, squash and dandelion flowers. You can also offer birdseed and finch pellets in to the vegetable mix. Make sure anything picked from a garden or yard is 100% pesticide and herbicide free. Veggies not to feed would be, spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard, cabbage and limit broccoli and kale, these tend to bind important nutrients or tend to induce metabolic problems overtime. Romaine lettuce and regular lettuce provide no nutritional value. Insects include: crickets, mealworms, superworms and waxworms. Insects should be used sparingly because of their kidneys inability to process large amounts of protein. All foods should be dusted with Vitamin D3 and calcium.

Re: Uro Diet
Be sure to give him time to settle. He may not eat right away due to stress and change in enviroment. I would give him at least a week without handling.

Re: Uro Diet
That's a big NO on the Daffodils. They are toxic. Toxic to children as well.

Re: Uro Diet
You are thinking of Daylilies. They are edible even by humans.
Daffodils, or anything else you aren't sure about should be left alone.

Re: Uro Diet
also the flowers in your vase where did they come from a florist? if so there is pesticides on them. even if the florist said there isnt there is. if your going to feed your uro flowers i would recommend you plant hollyhock, hybiscus, and dandalion.
dont pic dandalion from peoples yards as they may be treated with pesticide also. best to get from organic food store or grow your own. here are the best foods for your uro. Escarole, endive (chickory), dandalion leafs, bok choy this should be your staple diet. treats are Peas, green beans, lentils (soaked), mango, butternut sqash, i wouldnt feed to much of the corn, kale, mustard or collard greens and i dont feed mine any insects but if you do i would do it only maybe once a month or every two. as far as supplement i would not recommend dusting his food every day. if you have the proper lights and diet then it shouldnt be much of a problem. mine wont eat his food if it is dusted with anything. so i only dust my treats that he cant resist. about once a week. |

Re: Uro Diet
Do you have a specific reason for that? As far as I know, mustard and collard greens are high in nutrients and excellent staples for vegetarian (or mostly vegetarian) reptiles.
I do have to say that you (snakelover) keep mentioning that you feed them lettuce. Nix that. Lettuce isn't bad for them, but it's not giving them vital nutrients they need to live. They will become malnurished on a diet of lettuce. Instead read over that care sheet Liz linked you to, and switch to the greens listed there.
