Re: Uro Subsrate
The clay says the reptiles can burrow into it, but it gets pretty hard, i havent seen my skink attempt to dig through it yet, i built all the burrows myself, using plastic pots cut in half and ballons to let it harden in place.
As for his leavings and changing the clay, i actualy have a thin layer of dried eco earth on top of most of the clay, i spot clean the cage regulary, and change the eco earth out. That way the clay lasts longer. the bag says change when soiled, but all the leavings are solid, so I have'nt had a huge problem with that, i just remix it with hot water every once in awile. However my skink is smaller then a uro, it may be different for him.

Re: Uro Subsrate
here is a good website for common fish tank sizes.
Aquarium Sizes and Weights Also, you can multiply the l x w x h and plug it into this conversion calculator to get the gallon size. Cubic Inches to US Gallons (Liquid) conversion calculator - Volume conversions

Re: Uro Subsrate
i wouldnt use the clay at all. first off in order to get it to harden you have to get it wet and then it must dry. where were your uro be during this time. in a super humid tank for a week or so???? as I am doing and I would recommend you do. to cut the chance of inpaction use washed play sand and you dont wash it (should say it on the bag). use it on the side of the tank he sleeps at night and then use some river rock to seperate half the tank and put a cool hide on the other side. food on the cool side. im not a pro at uros and havent had mine a long time. but I have had other reptiles so im not a newbie.
as I think I mentiond before bugs should be the last thing to feed your uro. baby uros in the wild eat bugs because they need protien to grow but as they get older I believe its there liver that cant handle the protien. I also think because they get fat they get slower and choose to eat a eaiser meal like plant matter. could be a combo of both LOL i will also allways stress a bigger enclosure to make him/her very happy. Of course in the wild they would be at its best. but since we got em you should try to make them as happy as possible. the less stress and more running room the better in my opinion however not saying to never do it. i also believe they wouldnt go after something so fast that they dont want it. some will say there attacking the bug because there deffinding there territory from anything but I beg to differ as my uro will not attack my small dog thru the glass nor my leopard gecko about his size (though he does look it it funny) but if I put a cricket or some juvinile iguana veggie food or peas or lentils. then he will bit the glass to try and get it. so I dont buy that theory just monitor it to a low level. i feed mine crickets dusted with uro dust and some rep cal with d3 and I give him about 3 med crickets once a month. if you cant get your uro to eat from your hand then hold a cricket in it and u shouldnt have a problem. breaks trust barriers well with a wc uro. anyway if u want to know anything feel free to ask |

Re: Uro Subsrate
where do you get the hide?
also, do you just give crickets to him dead or take of the jumping legs so he can catch them or what? it kinda sounds like there dead cuz I don't know about you but I could NOT keep a live cricket in my hand long enough to sprinkle stuff on it AND wait for my mali to come and eat it!LOL love the pic! he/she's soo cute! |

Or, after they are coated, use a pair of feeding tongs to offer them to your critter.

Re: Uro Subsrate
i would use sand on one side and slate or ceramic tile square (the 12"x12" tiles for a floor in your house) just get one in a rock type pattern and isnt toally smooth or real glossy and u need a hide on each side.
