Re: Pictures Of My Mali's

If you click real fast between picture 9 & 10 it's like a short movie loop.... Number 6 & 7 is even better!! That was fun!

Well - it's impossible to tell the sex by the pics here. The vent area MIGHT offer a clue in the right light, but you have to get the view just right. What looks like is going on here though is a dominance issue and one that may need some intervention. You have one obviously wanting to dominate the basking area.

What size tank is that? It looks like you're in serious need of something larger.... You need at least a 40 gal. breeder or larger. What are the temps in the three zones (basking-cool end-ambient)? What kind of UVB is there?

Re: Pictures Of My Mali's

Slow down some!! Take a breath...inhale...exhale...

Before you can find out what you need - you have to know what you have.

You can find out what light you have even if you don't have the box anymore. Turn off the light and look at what's stamped on the bulb. Give ALL the info stamped on it. Is it a spiral? Is it a weird looped bulb? Is it like a flood lamp?

Do you have one light fixture or two?

I saw something about a heat rock for another post. You had LOTS of replies so I didn't bother. I figured you had gotten some good answers there already. Maybe you can take it back as store credit if you still have the packaging and receipt.

What do you feed them?

Where are they fed?

What kind of dish are they fed in?

Do you have a digital probe thermometer?

Many of these things you don't even need to pay the high prices you find in a pet store. These can be purchased in regular dept. stores. So list what you have and we can help you with the details of what you need.

Also list any kind of supplements and sprays the chick at the store sold you.

Re: Pictures Of My Mali's

O.K. - it sounds like you have a ZooMed 50W basking bulb? This has NO UVB whatsoever. Your tank is only big enough for tarantulas and scorpions, and the diet needs a revamp. Don't worry - this can all be fixed....

This may get a little tricky with trying to house two in one place - especially if they're males. I suggest one of three things. Get two separate set-ups which means doubling the cost of everything, setting up two basking areas in no less than a 75 gal. for two lizards, or finding a new home for one. You can try the two basking area scenario - but it's no guarantee it will work. I'll give you a run down of what you need for ONE enclosure - and you you choose to go the two tank route - just double the recipe....

Single tank set-up:
  • 40 gal. breeder tank
  • UVB source - Reptisun 5.0 or better on the tubes.
  • Heat source - regular light bulb but wattage will be determined on what the thermometer reads. Probably 75W minimum to start.
  • 2 Digital indoor/outdoor therm. (dept. store - one for basking area and cool end)
  • Hide box (can be a tupperware box if you don't mind looks - they sure won't care).
  • food dish
  • newspaper substrate
  • light fixtures to hold you UVB and heat bulb.
  • Night heat source (only if your temps go below 60).

Set the basking area up on one end.

Single tank set-up with2 basking areas:
  • 75 gal. tank (short if they make them - more floor space)
  • double UVB source
  • Double heat source
  • Double hide box
  • At least 3 Thermometers (both basking areas and cool spot)

For this I would suggest a basking area on both ends and feeding stations on both ends. The cool spot would be somewhere in the middle. I'll post separate for the diet.
